Description

Lobelia erinus 'Cambridge Blue' is a small, bushy, trailing annual with dense light green foliage. It flowers profusely from June until September, displaying masses of small, pale blue, butterfly-like blooms. Perfect for filling out hanging baskets and containers!

Lobelia erinus, also known as edging lobelia, is a popular plant for containers and hanging baskets. It produces numerous slender, branched stems which come together to form soft, rounded cushions. Leaves are small and narrow, light green to dark green in colour; all summer long, they are smothered in abundant blooms. Each flower measures about 1 cm long, with a tubular base, flaring out into three large downward-facing petals and two smaller upward-facing petals. They are regularly visited by foraging insects.

Lobelia is a great edging plant for sunny borders and summer bedding schemes. It shines in containers and hanging baskets, effortlessly blending in and highlighting other summer-flowering annuals. It enjoys a sunny position, preferably shaded from scorching afternoon heat, in moist, well-drained soil. It suffers from drought, so make sure to water regularly. For extra vigour, feed with fertilizer once every so often. In the right growing conditions, Lobelia will flower continuously from early summer until October.

Lobelia seeds are best left to experienced, seasoned gardeners as they are extremely small, like fine dust.

Planting and care

The Lobelia Cambridge Blue is preferably sown under cover in a seed tray from March, as the seeds will prefer a temperature between 18 and 24°C.

To distribute the fine Lobelia seeds more easily, mix them with a little sand. Just cover the seeds with a very thin layer of substrate that you will keep slightly moist. Place them in the sun (essential) and if possible wrap the seed tray in transparent plastic film during the germination period. They will germinate between 14 and 21 days. As soon as they emerge, remove the protective film. When the seedlings are large enough to be moved, you can separate them and put them in pots if the frost period is not over and keep them warm. Otherwise, you can arrange them in flower beds or pots. You can gradually acclimatize them if the nights are still cool by taking them out of their shelter during the day. Prefer a rich substrate, but not too waterlogged.

Make sure to water the Lobelias regularly, but avoid excess water.
