Description
Pelargonium Summer Showers Burgundy, better known as ivy-leaf geranium, is a generous plant that produces many clusters of single, dark red flowers on numerous well-branched and flexible stems from May to November. Its trailing habit, resistance to harsh weather conditions and diseases, and ease of care make this plant the king of balconies. It will survive the heat of summer, where other plants often fail. This versatile geranium thrives just as well in partial shade as in full sun and tolerates cooler temperatures. Create sumptuous displays by mixing the colours.
Ivy geraniums, among others, are derived from Pelargonium peltatum, a plant from the geranium family native to the coastal region of the Cape Province in South Africa. This species has the characteristic of forming creeping or spreading stems, with foliage which resembles ivy. The hybrids we know as ivy-leaved geraniums have the same trailing habit and increased floribundance. The Summer Showers Burgundy variety quickly forms a round, both erect and trailing clump, 35 cm (14in) tall, composed of numerous flexible stems branching from the base and adorned with bright green, five-pointed, peltate, circular, slightly fleshy and aromatic leaves, quite resistant to fungal diseases. The remarkably long and abundant flowering takes place from May to the first frosts. The single and asymmetrical flowers are a deep burgundy red with narrow petals.
Ivy geraniums are splendid plants, ideal for decorating pots for a large part of the year. They cascade heavily from flower boxes and balconies where their single flowers create round and colourful masses that blend together or enhance other plants, whether trailing like purple or chocolate-leaved ipomoeas (Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace, Ipomoea Sweet Heart Purple) or upright like zonal geraniums, petunias, gauras or fuchsias.

Planting and care
Sowing:
Sow from mid-January to mid-March.
Sow ivy-leaved geranium seeds in trays, pots, etc. in a special seed compost. Enclose the pots in a propagator or place them in a warm location to maintain an optimal temperature of 20-25°C (68-77°F). Sowing depth: 1.5 mm (0in). Germination can take 3 to 21 days. Provide an even day and night temperature for best results.
Transplant the young plants when they are large enough to handle. Harden off the young plants and place them outside when all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 30cm (12in) apart in a very sunny location.
Cultivation:
You can plant ivy geraniums in the ground or in pots. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (petunias tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in pots in a warm and bright place.
The geraniums will flower from June to October. Plant them in a sunny or partially shaded position, sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich but well-drained soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Geraniums are frost-sensitive (minimum -2°C (28.4°F)).
They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid geranium fertilizer once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves to keep them looking good and extend flowering.
