Description

The Phlox Drummondii 'Dwarf Beauty' Mix, also known as Drummond's Phlox, is a collection of dwarf annuals. These beautifully brighten the edges of flower beds with their compact and bushy habit. Their numerous small white, pink, red, and purple flowers bloom from June to August and delight butterflies. Easy to grow, this mix requires no maintenance and allows for creating bouquets throughout the summer.

The Phlox Drummondii gets its name from a Scottish naturalist, Thomas Drummond, who discovered this plant in the Texas prairies in 1830. This species is small (15 to 30 cm (6 to 12in) tall) and forms a bushy clump. Its leaves are green lanceolate and create a dense background that bears panicles of various colours. These panicles consist of multiple tubular flowers (about 2 cm (1in)) with five lobes. They have a slight fragrance and add undeniable charm to romantic gardens. They prefer a sunny exposure and fertile soil to bloom abundantly. Don't hesitate to give them water in case of prolonged dryness and place them in well-drained soil.

The vibrant and intense colours of the 'Dwarf Beauty' Mix Phlox will be perfect for bordering pathways and accentuating flower beds. With a few sowings, you will obtain a variety of tones that will brighten the summer, leaving monotony and uniformity behind.

Planting and care

The Phlox Drummondii 'Dwarf Beauty' Mix should preferably be sown indoors in a seed tray from March onwards. If your climate is mild, you can even start in February, as the seeds can germinate as soon as the temperatures range between 13 and 15°C (55.4 and 59°F).

Just cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost (1 to 2 mm (0in)) that you will keep slightly moist and place in the sun (essential for germination). They will sprout between 10 and 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to be transplanted and the frost period is over, you can plant them. Choose a fairly well-drained soil, if possible rich and in the sun.

You can also sow them directly in place after loosening the surface soil. Place one seed every 10/15 cm (4/6in).

Phlox are susceptible to powdery mildew, so you can perform a preventive treatment and water the plant base rather than the foliage.
