Description

This collection of Laurentia or Isotoma brings together three superb varieties that joyfully mix their fragrant star-shaped blossoms in shades of blue-mauve, pink, and violet, on a large cushion adorned with beautifully cut foliage. These three plants work well together in a large flowering pot, measuring 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) in diameter, and they will bloom from July to October. Propagated from cuttings, they are particularly vigorous. Plant this charming trio at the edge of a flowerbed or in hanging baskets and planters on the patio, and let their charm work its magic!

The collection consists of:

1 plug plant of Laurentia 'Beth's Blue', with small lavender-mauve flowers that shimmer with blue hues.

1 plug plant of Laurentia 'Fizz'n'Pop Dark Pink', with large flowers of a brilliant pink-violet colour, dotted with a yellow eye.

1 plug plant of Laurentia 'Fizz'n Pop Glowing Purple', with large flowers of an iridescent purple-violet colour, dotted with a yellow eye.

Originally from Australia, Laurentia or Isotoma axillaris is a rapidly growing herbaceous perennial plant with woody base, often cultivated as an annual due to its lack of hardiness, but also because of its long and abundant flowering. It belongs to the Campanulaceae family. It quickly forms a well-branched, naturally compact, and nicely rounded clump, measuring 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in) in all directions. Its narrow, tapered, finely cut and toothed evergreen leaves are a dark green colour. From July to October, and even until the first frost, its countless 5-pointed flowers with tapered lobes bloom in a star shape. They are rich in nectar, slightly fragrant, and frequently visited by pollinating insects. This plant tolerates heat and drought well, but will be more floriferous in fertile and moist soil.

Laurentia is an easy-to-grow and highly floriferous plant, interesting for its light texture and tolerance to hot weather. It can be used in flowerbeds among other plants, in borders, and of course in pots, hanging baskets, and planters. It pairs well with a wide variety of other annual or perennial plants such as begonias, petunias, bacopas, nemophila, pink gypsophila, or geraniums, for example. It is a lovely rockery plant, which can be combined with Osteospermum, Helianthemum, Penstemon, catmints or hyssops.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before placing them outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Laurentia requires very little maintenance and will happily grow in a sunny position.  Plant it in the garden after the last frost. Ensure that the plant does not lack water and remove faded flowers from time to time.  It will be more floriferous and more beautiful when planted in soil that remains slightly moist. In very mild climates, it shows perennial characteristics, but it is advisable to overwinter the plant if you want to keep it from year to year. Repot it and keep it in a veranda or cold greenhouse during winter. Attention: the sap of this plant can be irritating to certain people. Slugs and snails enjoy its foliage: make sure to protect your young plants in spring.
