Description

The Pelargonium 'Deerwood Lavender' is a lovely geranium with small violet flowers and very thin petals on a lavender-scented foliage. This variety forms a small, free-spirited and loose clump of grey-green foliage, with almost a miniature climbing behavior that suits its unassuming flowering. This geranium bears small flowers of intense violet with small yellow stamens, perhaps less spectacular than those of classic hybrids, whether perennial or annual, but more natural. Let it cascade on a sunny windowsill and overwinter it in the cold season to see it reappear in spring.

This hybrid pelargonium is the result of cross-breeding between the species Pelargonium dichondrifolium x ionidiflorum. It is similar to the species of the Reniformia group (kidney-shaped). Its habit is graceful and loose with long stems. It measures about 25 cm (10in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in width. Its small, vaguely prickly leaves, ovate and slightly recurved, are a silvery grey-green colour. They emit a lavender fragrance. This variety blooms extensively from May to September. Its small, simple and modest flowers with thin petals are of an intense violet colour.

This geranium, with its behaviour of a small climber, is also quick to cascade. Install it in a hanging basket, on a windowsill, or train it. It benefits from being pinched when young to moderate its unrestrained behavior. Plant it in a pot or in the ground, in a place where you can enjoy its fragrance, along a border or in a planter, on the terrace or in the conservatory. Accompany it with small grasses like carex or small creeping sedums to fill the spaces left empty by this voluble pelargonium.

Planting and care

Plant your young geraniums in open ground after the last frosts, in a sunny position. You can also plant them in pots placed in a sheltered position, which you will take outside in May. If you plant them in open ground, wait until the frosts have passed. Fragrant geraniums require well-drained soil, but not necessarily very rich soil. Water moderately. In pots, regular watering is necessary in summer. You can keep your geraniums by bringing them indoors under a veranda or a cold greenhouse in winter. They can tolerate a slight frost, but will not survive the winter in the garden.
