More information

This new geranium combines abundant and prolonged flowering with aromatic foliage, which according to its creator, has repellent properties against mosquitoes. The plant produces countless small flowers, almost tricolored, with deep pink-burgundy and mauve spots on a white background, engulfing a stunning scented foliage, reminiscent of lemongrass. Its bushy and upright habit is ideal for flowering pots, providing a permanent feature outdoors or in the conservatory.

Description

This Geranium or Pelargonium 'Mosquitaway Eva' is a version with pinker flowers than those of its sister 'Lizzy'. This new variety with fragrant foliage also flowers particularly abundantly, a quality that is generally lacking in pelargoniums with aromatic foliage. From June to October, its countless small single flowers, with deep pink-burgundy and mauve spots on a white background, engulf an stunning tender green foliage, whose lemon-scented fragrance is said to repel mosquitoes. In any case, it looks great with its neat bushy habit and its very pretty flowers, making it a permanent decoration outdoors or in the conservatory. Another delightful and easy-to-grow pelargonium that you'll want to protect from frost so that it's ready for spring.

Regal geraniums consist of perennial hybrids from the geranium family, in a large group called Pelargonium x domesticum. They are mostly derived from Pelargonium cucullatum, native to the southwest of the Cape Province in South Africa, with the contribution of different wild species. The group of 'Angel' type geraniums, which emerged in the 1930s, gathers plants resulting from various crosses between Pelargonium crispum (with aromatic foliage) and very floriferous, regal pelargoniums. The Mosquitaway geranium, which is part of this group of hybrids, is a very recent variety that combines a number of qualities. It comes in two varieties, 'Eva' and 'Lizzy'. The plant forms a bushy and dense clump with a compact medium growth habit, about 35 cm (13.8 in) in height and 30 cm (11.8 in) in width. It produces masses of single flowers, from June to October. In 'Eva', each flower is composed of two velvety upper petals that are almost entirely deep purplish-pink, washed with mauve, and three pinkish-white lower petals with a small purplish-pink blotch. Its fleshy stems bear small rounded, quite thick, deeply veined light green leaves, with a lemony scent.

The regal geraniums produce long-lasting, very cheerful displays throughout the summer. They prefer semi-shaded and cool conditions. These plants tolerate a lack of light quite well, which means they can be combined with hostas, ferns, New Guinea impatiens, begonias or lobelias with their incredible blues. Create magnificent pots and hanging baskets by combining plain or variegated colours and foliage. The 'Mosquitaway Eva' variety can be a magnificent showpiece in the home all year round, especially when flowers are scarce in winter.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products best suited for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (conservatory, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C/57.2°F for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has  passed.

Planting and care

'Angel' regal geraniums thrive in fertile, well-drained, neutral to chalky soils, well-prepared and in partial shade. Geraniums are nutrient-hungry plants that require regular fertilizer to give their best performance.

You can plant pelargoniums as early as March-April in mild climates, but they will need to be brought indoors in the case of frost. To be on the safe side, wait until after the last frost before placing them outside. When planting in pots or containers, use special geranium compost.

In the garden, wait until late April or even mid-May to plant them in the ground and add a special geranium growing medium to your soil.
