I am a bit disappointed with the Roi des Balcons geraniums that I received. I know they are plug plants, but they are really tiny. Three of them have already died. I should mention that due to the weather, I haven't planted them outside, but kept them sheltered in a greenhouse.

Description

The Ivy Geranium 'Roi des Balcons Impérial' is a remarkable and generous plant that tirelessly produces clusters of bright red flowers on numerous flexible stems from May to November. Its trailing habit, weather resistance, and ease of maintenance make it the perfect choice for balconies. These geraniums are quite hardy and can survive the summer heat when other plants fail. They thrive in partial shade and full sun and can tolerate cooler temperatures well. You can create beautiful displays by mixing different colours.

Ivy geraniums originate from the Geranium family, specifically the Pelargonium peltatum plant native to the Cape Province coast in South Africa. This plant has a unique characteristic of forming spreading or trailing stems with leaves that resemble ivy. The hybrids of this plant, known as ivy geraniums, display the same trailing habit and increased flower production. The 'Roi des Balcons Impérial' variety grows in a round, trailing clump with numerous flexible stems, bright green, five-pointed lobed foliage featuring peltate, circular, slightly fleshy, and aromatic leaves. They have a long and abundant flowering period from May to the first frost. The single, asymmetrical flowers are intensely bright red with narrow petals.

Ivy geraniums are a splendid addition to any container and are ideal for decorating most of the year. They cascade heavily from hanging baskets and balconies, and their single flowers create colourful masses that blend together or enhance other plants, whether trailing like purple or chocolate foliage ipomoeas (Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace, Ipomoea Sweet Heart Purple) or upright like zonal geraniums, petunias, gauras, or fuchsia.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them in a sheltered area (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame, etc.) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Ivy geraniums can be planted either in the ground or in a pot. If you choose to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to encourage growth.

These geraniums will bloom from June to October. It is best to plant them in a sunny or partially shaded location that is sheltered from the wind. These plants require a light and humus-rich soil, which must be well-drained. During the beginning of the growing season, it's important not to water them too much as they are sensitive to excess moisture. While they can tolerate drought, they will require regular watering during hot summer weather. Geraniums are sensitive to frost, with a minimum temperature of -2°.

As they are fast-growing and very floriferous, they require a lot of nutrients. Feeding them with a liquid geranium fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season is recommended. To keep them looking good and extend their flowering period, it's important to remove faded flowers and leaves as they appear.
