Description

The Balcony Lilac Ivy Geranium is an incredibly generous plant that produces clusters of single, lilac-pink flowers on numerous flexible stems from May to November. Its trailing habit, ability to withstand bad weather, and easy maintenance make this plant the queen of balconies. They can tolerate the heat of summer where other plants might fail. These versatile geraniums thrive in both partial shade and full sun and can also tolerate cooler temperatures. You can create beautiful displays by mixing different colours.

Ivy geraniums are a type of plant that comes from Pelargonium peltatum, which belongs to the geranium family. This species is naturally found in the coastal region of the Cape Province in South Africa and has the ability to form creeping or spreading stems with foliage resembling that of ivy. The ivy geranium hybrids we know today exhibit the same trailing habit and increased abundance of flowers. The Balcony Lilac variety of ivy geraniums grows as a round, trailing clump that reaches a height of 20 cm (7.9 in). It is composed of numerous flexible stems adorned with bright green, five-pointed lobed foliage. The leaves are circular, slightly fleshy, and aromatic with a peltate shape. The plant produces an abundant amount of flowers that last from May until the first frost. The single, asymmetrical flowers are intensely pink with narrow petals.

Ivy geraniums are wonderful plants that can be used to decorate pots and balconies for most of the year. They have a heavy cascading growth habit that creates colourful masses of single flowers. These masses can blend with other plants such as purple or chocolate-foliaged Ipomoeas (Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace, Ipomoea Sweet Heart Purple) that trail down, or upright plants like zonal geraniums, petunias, gauras, or fuchsias.

Please note that our young plug plants are professional products meant for experienced gardeners. Upon receiving them, it is important to repot and store them in a sheltered location such as a veranda, greenhouse or cold frame, at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before planting them outdoors. This will allow them to adapt to their new environment and ensure they are better equipped to withstand any potential frost.

Planting and care

You can grow Ivy Geraniums in either the ground or pots. For outdoor planting, waiting until the last heavy frosts have passed is advisable. However, you can pre-cultivate them in pots in a warm, bright place to speed up their growth. Geraniums generally bloom from June to October. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot sheltered from the wind when planting. Geraniums thrive in well-draining, light, and humus-rich soil. Avoid overwatering them during the initial growing season, as they are sensitive to excess moisture. Although they can withstand drought well, they require regular watering during hot summer periods. Geraniums are susceptible to frost (minimum -2°C).

As they are fast-growing and highly floriferous, Ivy Geraniums require frequent feeding. Feeding them with a liquid geranium fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season is recommended. Ensure to remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep the plant looking attractive and prolong flowering.
