Description

Zonal Pelargoniums or Flic Flac Red Nova Pelargonium is a new variety that combines originality, vigour, and floribundity. It charms first and foremost with its mischievous and ever-changing semi-double flowers, randomly variegated in orange and white, delicately speckled and striated with red, more long-lasting than single flowers. All flower enthusiasts will also appreciate its ease of cultivation and its beautiful two-tone green zonal foliage. A very beautiful plant for containers!

The zonal group pelargoniums encompass perennial hybrids of the geranium family, in a large group called Pelargonium x hortorum. They are mostly derived from cross-breeding several Pelargonium species native to the southeastern tip of Africa. The Flic Flac Red Nova geranium is a recently improved variety. The vigorous plant forms a bushy and dense rounded habit, with a moderate development of about 35-40cm (14-16in) in all directions. It produces flowers from May-June to October. Each plant and even each bouquet of flowers has its own personality, but all combine white, light orange, and red. The sturdy and succulent stems of this geranium bear round and weakly lobed leaves, quite thick, with prominent veins arranged in a fan shape. The lamina is medium green, with a circular zone of darker green towards the periphery.

Once reserved for balconies and terraces, pelargoniums are now making a very noticeable entrance into sunny flower beds and borders. Plant them in mass to create a lasting and cheerful display throughout the entire summer season. These plants tolerate drought quite well, which allows them to be paired with garden verbenas, lobelias with unheard-of blues, and black or purple-foliaged Ipomeas (Ipomoea 'Illusion Midnight Lace', Ipomoea 'Sweet Heart Purple'). Create magnificent containers and hanging baskets by combining them with varieties of different colours, Million Bells, variegated periwinkles, Dichondra 'Silver Falls', violets, and Calibrachoas.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being placed outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

Zonal geraniums Flic Flac Red Nova thrive in fertile, well-drained, well-tilled soils and full sun. Geraniums are hungry plants that require regular fertilizer inputs to give their best.

You can plant pelargoniums as early as March-April in mild climate regions, but you will need to bring them indoors in case of frost. To avoid any risk, wait until the end of frost to place them outside, usually around May in the North. When planting in pots or containers, use special geranium compost.

In the garden, wait until the end of April, or even mid-May in the northernmost regions, to plant them in the ground and provide a special geranium growing support to your soil.
