Absolutely stunning! I highly recommend this plant with its incredible colouring. However, beware of slugs that don't eat the leaves but the flowers!!!

Description

Passion red, highly fragrant, double, the flowers of this Belarina Valentine double Primrose resemble small roses. They appear from January to April, offering their flowering nestled among a tangle of large wavy and evergreen leaves, of a beautiful fresh green. Once widely planted in English cottages, double primroses had almost disappeared. New varietal creations are bringing back these very romantic biennials to the forefront.

Primula vulgaris (acaulis) Belarina Valentine is a herbaceous biennial plant from the primrose family, derived from the Primula vulgaris found in our meadows and woodlands. It is part of a series of recent creations that are distinguished by their flowering from December-January to March-April, by the doubling of their corollas and by their very vibrant colours. They are floriferous plants, which form pretty dense clumps of foliage in a few months, reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) and a width of 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in). They develop persistent rosettes of wavy and veined leaves, of a beautiful fresh green shade. 'Belarina Valentine' produces flowers with a diameter of 3 cm (1in), which appear for 4 to 5 weeks. They are very double, resembling small roses, with an intense red colour, gathered in perfect clusters. They are beautiful but also very fragrant, and carried by short hairy peduncles surrounded by luxuriant foliage.

Belarina primroses are versatile, reliable and really easy to grow. They deserve to be featured in all gardens and on all balconies. Colourful, floriferous and fragrant, they announce the return of spring. Perfect in pots, in flower boxes, in flower beds, in borders, they even grow in the shade in fertile and moist soil, alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets and forget-me-nots. Under the cover of deciduous trees, in rock gardens and short grass meadows, they mingle with snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Benefits:

They are the same as those of the common primrose and the cowslip: the flowers are soothing and calming, they are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves fight against the formation of bruises, and the whole plant (especially the root) has analgesic, antispasmodic, diuretic and expectorant properties.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, flower boxes or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

The plug plants of double primroses 'Belarina valentine' can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them if possible as soon as you receive them, in September-October. If the planned location is not ready yet or if the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good compost for flowering plants (geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, light and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the compost. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and to empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, the perennial primroses 'Belarina' are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, at the end of February or beginning of March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertiliser for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once the flowering is over, container-grown plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
