Unfortunately, they were much too small upon arrival, and 3 out of 4 were dried up.

More information

The flowers of this primrose are particularly spectacular and bright. They are single in their form, but their astonishing petals are entirely striped with white on a violet-blue background, around a yellow-orange centre. These flowers renew themselves from December to April, regardless of the weather's whims, on compact and disease-resistant young plants. New varietal creations put these biennials back in the spotlight, much to our delight! They are perfect in pots, in flower beds, borders, and grow in the sun or partial shade, in fertile and moist soil.

Description

The flowers of the hybrid primrose or Primula ZebraBlueF1 are particularly spectacular and bright. They are simple in shape, but their astonishing petals are entirely striped with white on a purple-blue background, around a yellow-orange centre. These flowers bloom from December to April, unaffected by the whims of the weather, on compact and disease-resistant plants. New varieties bring these biennials back into the spotlight, much to our delight! They are perfect in pots, containers, flower beds, borders, and grow in full sun or partial shade in fertile and moist soil.

Primula Zebra Blue is an herbaceous biennial plant from the primrose family, derived from Primula vulgaris found in our meadows and woodlands. It is part of a series of recent creations that stand out for their abundant and continuous flowering, from December-January to March-April, their excellent disease resistance, and their compact habit. They are floriferous plants that form lovely dense clumps of foliage in just a few months, reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) and a width of 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12in). They develop persistent rosettes of wavy and veined leaves, in a beautiful bright green colour. 'Zebra Blue' produces flowers entirely striped with white on a blue background. They are gathered in perfect clusters and carried by short hairy peduncles surrounded by luxuriant foliage. This variety appreciates sunny positions.

Zebra Blue F1 primroses are versatile, reliable, and truly easy to grow biennials. They deserve to be included in all gardens and balconies. Colourful, floriferous, and early flowering, they announce and precede the return of spring. Whether in flower beds or in containers on a balcony, these small plants are ideal companions for botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. They are perfect in borders, low flower beds under leafy cover, rockeries, and short grass meadows, among snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be eaten raw or cooked.

Properties:

They are the same as those of the common primrose and the oxlip: the flowers are soothing, calming and used in expectorant preparations. The leaves combat the formation of bruises, and the whole plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic, and expectorant properties.

Note: Please note, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in flower beds.

Planting and care

Primroses can be planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them if possible upon receipt, in September-October. If the planned location is not ready yet or if the conditions are unfavourable for planting, you can grow them in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good potting soil for flowering plants (geranium compost) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, which is light and well-draining. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water generously when planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be cautious of excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, biennial primroses are nutrient-demanding plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week when watering. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooms. Once the flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
