Description

Erysimum 'Winter Joy', a variety of wallflower, is a perennial and evergreen subshrub that produces large bright purple flowers. Its spring flowering is very long, lasting from late February to early July.

The perennial shrubby wallflower 'Winter Joy' quickly forms a well-branched small bush with a round habit. Its elongated foliage of lovely bright green has a crenate border and persists throughout the winter. Starting from late February, spikes of large 4-petalled flowers typical of the Brassicaceae family begin to add colour. The flowering constantly renews until the first hot weather in late June, early July depending on the regions. Wallflowers naturally grow in stony soil and even on walls, so 'Winter Joy' will appreciate well-drained soil in the garden or a draining potting mix in containers, in full sun exposure. Hardy, it does not like to have wet feet in winter.

Erysimum 'Winter Joy' will form a small flowered bush with abundant flowering. The numerous flowers are slightly fragrant and display a pure violet colour of incredible brightness. A short-lived perennial, grown as a biennial, it is an ideal plant to anchor spring compositions combining bulbs, other biennials, and foliage in pots and containers, but also in seasonal flower beds, taking inspiration from what city gardeners do: for example, play with an association with honesty plants, whose flowers resemble it but on a taller plant to be placed in the center of the bed.

Note: Please note that our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, containers, or directly in the flower bed.

Planting and care

The budlings of Erysimum 'Winter Joy' are planted in pots and flower beds or directly in open ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible after receiving them, in September-October. If the planned location is not yet ready or if the conditions are not favourable for planting (heavy rains or too dry soil), you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks. At planting or shortly after, you must absolutely pinch the tip of the plant between your thumb and index finger to remove the terminal bud and stimulate branching. It is possible to repeat this operation until mid-October to obtain denser bushes.

In pots and flower beds, use a good well-draining soil for flowering plants (for example with a lot of bark or perlite) and enriched with slow-release fertilizer. The top of the root ball should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as the budlings can dry out quickly. However, be careful of excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

From 3 weeks after planting and until after flowering, apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water, even in winter (as long as watering is necessary). The withered spikes can be cut with scissors to maintain a neat appearance of the plant, but it is not essential, the flowering continues on its own as long as the plant does not lack water. Once the flowering is over, the plants in pots can be replanted in the garden in full sun after being pruned by about 5cm (2in). Be careful with winter humidity, choose a really well-drained soil, as poor conditions will affect its hardiness.
