Description

The Clematis 'Blue Eclipse', an elegant climbing plant that reaches a height of 3m (10ft), bears numerous bell-shaped flowers with violet margins tinged with white, which open from May to July.

An early flowering variety, this robust "Queen of lianas" produces solitary flowers in open, trailing bells, with violet margins tinged with white, measuring 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) in diameter, on the previous year's branches. Its deciduous, elongated medium green leaves, measuring 8cm (3in) in length, are arranged in tripinnate formation and are borne on voluble stems that twine around their support using tendrils. At the end of flowering, decorative fruits appear, topped with a silver gray feathery style.

The 'Blue Eclipse' Clematis thrives in clay-siliceous, light, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny location with the base shaded. Planting ground cover plants is recommended. It is well-suited for the East. Watch out for aphids!

The 'Blue Eclipse' Clematis, whether combined with other varieties or paired with a climbing rose, is perfect for adorning walls, fences, bamboo pyramids, or the trunk of a tree.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilizer, as it promotes foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to prevent excessive moisture, which can lead to disease.

Planting and care

The 'Blue Eclipse' Clematis is planted in spring or autumn, 5cm (2in) deep, with the root ball placed flat on the ground and not vertically as usual. The head in the sun and the foot in the shade. Cover the foot with a small mound of soil to promote new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. The pruning afterwards will consist of removing dead or damaged stems after flowering.
