Positive aspects: Very beautiful flowering. Negative aspects: It needs to be supported as it doesn't attach itself. Overall opinion: Planted since last year, it blooms a lot. The flowers are beautiful and truly very unique.

Description

The Clematis Cassis is a new variety, offering a double flowering of violet colour like no other. This Clematis was awarded during the Courson Plant Days in October 2009.

This unique climbing plant has a relatively compact (bushy) habit for the variety, not exceeding 2 m (7ft) in height. This Cassis variety is a cousin of the florida varieties, indeed its flowers are double strongly resembling the flowers of the florida varieties. With a particular violet color, the flowers measure 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter and bloom from June to September. Its foliage is deciduous, tri-lobed, and of purplish-green colour.

The clematis thrives on old walls, fences, and trees, but this little liana will also adorn your balconies and terraces, so it is a plant that also has its place in a pot. It is a hardy plant that likes freshness, so we recommend putting a good layer of bark.

Its worst enemy is excessive water: it needs to be watered regularly but in small amounts.

Our advice: associate it with artemisia or white gaura planted at the base.

Planting and care

In a sunny position, shade the base of your young plant with a ground cover or a perennial geranium. Clematis plants like to have their roots kept cool. Plant your young plant by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil that has been worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), enriched with good compost. In the first few weeks, water abundantly and regularly. Clematis plants can cling on their own thanks to their tendrils. To promote their growth, provide them with a trellis support or let them dress the trunk of a tree by placing a wire mesh. Clematis plants also enjoy growing freely on neighboring plants. We advise against overwatering, as this can cause a fungus at the base of the clematis plant.
