More information

A dark blue-violet flowered version of 'Arabella' that exhibits the same qualities of vigour and floribundity. This magnificent climbing perennial quickly covers a wall with star-shaped flowers from June to September. Plant it in rather clayey soil that is well-worked, deep, moist, and fertile. It prefers a sunny position with its base in shade. It will work wonders in a pot on a patio.

Description

Clematis integrifolia 'Miranda' is a climbing perennial plant with good vigour and a generous and colourful flowering throughout summer. Its large star-shaped flowers boast a deep blue-violet shade, with a bunch of almost white stamens that create a pleasant contrast. It is perfect for covering a wall, a fence, or for creeping into a bush. This clematis also looks impressive in a pot on a patio. The vegetation of this clematis, like that of many perennials, completely disappears in winter.

The genus Clematis belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. Clematis integrifolia 'Miranda' is a British horticultural hybrid dating back to 1994, and is a sister to 'Arabella'. It is a climbing perennial plant with long leafy stems that can reach a height of 2m (7ft) and occupy 1m² (3ft²). Every spring, a multitude of stems emerge directly from its base. They bear small, entire, oval to elliptical leaves with a slightly glossy green colour. The flowers bloom abundantly from June to September if the soil remains moist. They are star-shaped, in a dark blue-violet colour, composed of 4 to 6 leaf-shaped petals. They are 10cm (4in) wide and show very clear stamens in their throat. The flowering is followed by the formation of feathery and silvery fruits, which are highly decorative at the end of the season. The above-ground, deciduous vegetation completely dries out in winter.

Plant Clematis integrifolia 'Miranda' alongside roses to accompany their flowering and conceal their bare stems. Clematis represents a diverse genus, with flowers in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their easy cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. The exquisite and vigorous Clematis 'Miranda' will be perfectly happy in a pot on a balcony, or on a bank with perennial sweet peas, variegated ivy, small-flowered periwinkles, love-in-a-mist, and euphorbias.

Planting and care

Plant in spring or autumn at a depth of 8cm (3in), placing the root ball flat on the soil instead of vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the roots in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots to form. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own. Pruning will involve cutting back all the previous year's stems to 20cm (8in) from the ground in March.
