More information

Very beautiful climbing plant, native to Madagascar, with very fragrant white flowers, mostly grown indoors as it does not tolerate temperatures below 5 °C (41°F). Its very long flowering period, which lasts from spring to autumn, is highlighted by beautiful shiny dark green foliage. Its stems need to be trained on a support. This jasmine thrives in full sun, moderate temperatures, and a fairly humid atmosphere. It is grown in a rich soil that is kept slightly moist from spring to autumn.

Description

If the Stephanotis floribunda (jasminoides) is better known as the Madagascar Jasmine, it is because of its Malagasy origins and the heady scent of its large white flowers. It is a climbing plant with twining stems and evergreen foliage that grows in semi-shaded forests, clinging to tree branches. Given its need for warmth and ambient humidity, this elegant tropical plant is cultivated in greenhouses or as an indoor plant.

The Stephanotis floribunda belongs to the apocynaceae family, just like periwinkle, false jasmine (Trachelospermum), and Mandevilla laxa. It is a twining vine with few branches and round section stems that coil around its support to climb higher and higher. In the ground, on the islands, it can climb up to 6m (20ft). Cultivated in a pot, the Madagascar Jasmine remains more modest in size (2.50 to 3m (8 to 10ft)). Its foliage persists year-round. It consists of ovate leaves measuring 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) long, thick, and a shiny dark green. They are marked by a large central vein that is slightly lighter. The leaves are arranged opposite each other on the stem. The flowering occurs from spring to autumn. Small clusters of 3 to 6 white flowers, with a tubular base that opens into 5 spread lobes, appear at the axil of the leaves. These flowers, with their thick and waxy texture, are very fragrant. Their fragrance is similar to that of jasmine.

Cultivate the Madagascar Jasmine in a warm greenhouse or indoors. It can be trained on trellises, arches, or a small structure made with stakes and wires. Direct light should be avoided, and in a greenhouse, it should be filtered to prevent leaf burn. A soil mix of leaf compost, one-third ericaceous compost, and one-third bark will suit it perfectly. Water once or twice a week from spring to autumn, without letting water stagnate in the saucer under the pot. In winter, only water when the soil dries out. Regularly mist water on the foliage to maintain ambient humidity. The ideal temperature is between 18 and 22°C (64.4 and 71.6°F), with atmospheric humidity levels close to 50%. For example, it can be paired, in a pot on the terrace, with another climbing plant that blooms at a different time, such as a passionflower, a 'Tangerine Slice' Black-eyed Susan, or a tuberous wisteria.

Planting and care

Madagascar jasmine is exclusively grown in pots in our climate, as it does not tolerate temperatures below 5 °C (41°F). The ideal temperature will range between 18 and 22 °C (64.4 and 71.6°F). A leaf-based potting soil, lightened with one-third compost and one-third bark, will be perfect. Quickly install a support on which the vines can attach. Since Madagascar jasmine branches very little, do not hesitate to plant multiple plants in the same pot, 10-15 cm (4-6in) apart. Keep the soil moist, but not excessively so, during growth. Water once or twice a week from spring to autumn, without allowing water to stagnate in the saucer under the pot. In winter, only water when the soil dries out. Regularly spray water on the foliage to maintain ambient humidity close to 50%, which will also prevent attacks from mites. Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain beauty and promote renewal.

Repot young plants every year, and then every 3 years, in spring before the development of new shoots. Prune during repotting and during the growing season.
