Description

The Schizophragma hydrangeoides Rose Sensation is a climbing bush with a woody base and rooting stems. In summer, it has a long flowering period of at least 3 weeks. These are small bouquets of slightly fragrant tiny sterile flowers gathered in flat terminal cymes measuring 10 to 25 cm (3.9 - 9.8 in) in diameter. The flowers are a magnificent cream-white, turning pink towards the end of the flowering period. This delicate colour is often absent in young specimens. This climbing plant is often confused with the climbing hydrangea or hydrangea petiolaris.

The Schizophragma, also called the Japanese Hydrangea, has a spreading habit. Its deciduous foliage, dark green, slightly silvery on the underside, turning yellow and sometimes red in autumn, measures from 7 to 15 cm (2.8 - 5.9 in) in length and has a heart shape with serrated margins. The growth of this false hydrangea is moderate and reaches a height of up to 6 m (19 ft 8 in), sometimes more than 10 m (32 ft 10 in) at maturity. This plant is known for its resistance.

The climbing plant, native to Japan and Korea, is ideal for covering a north-facing wall, giving it a decorative effect, a pergola, or even an old bare tree. It can also run along the ground. Except for young specimens under 3 years old, the Schizophragma clings on its own with climbing roots. It is one of the few climbing plants that enjoys shade, which is why it can revitalise areas where nothing else will grow.

Planting and care

Place the Schizophragma 'Roseum' in shade or partial shade in a rich, humus-rich, clay soil that is moist but well-drained. Plant it in autumn or spring. If you want to cover a large wall, plant one specimen every 2.50 m (8 ft). Guide the stems and tie them until they become rigid. Pruning should be done in spring when the plant is dormant, by removing any unruly or tangled stems, and possibly in autumn by deadheading in winter.
