Description

The Dwarf Nectarine Snow Baby® Zaisno is a self-fertile variety. A slow-growing dwarf tree, it is perfectly suited for container and small garden cultivation. It produces white-fleshed nectarines. The fruits are round, shiny red on a white background, as large as traditional nectarines, about 7 cm (3in) in diameter. Their flesh is juicy and flavorful. Harvest takes place when they reach ripeness in August. This variety requires little maintenance: light pruning will be sufficient. It is resistant to cold.

The species name "Persica" was given to the peach, which was thought to originate from Persia. In reality, all cultivated forms originate from northern China. The Nectarine is a natural mutation of the peach that is believed to have occurred in the 16th century. The Dwarf Nectarine Snow Baby® Zaisno is an American mutation of the original Asian peach, obtained in the USA.

Like many fruit trees, the Dwarf Nectarine Snow Baby® Zaisno appreciates light, rich, and deep soils. It does not tolerate excess water or heavy and compact soils well. It is a low-vigor dwarf tree, suitable for container and small garden cultivation. Its spreading habit indicates a tree with many horizontally growing branches. Its deciduous foliage is bright green and emits a slight almond scent. Its leaves are long, 8 to 15 cm (3 to 6in) in length and 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) wide, with a short petiole.
Its magnificent flowering, dark pink, occurs in late March. This late flowering and its cold resistance make it suitable for cultivation in northern areas, but still reserve a sunny and wind-protected location for it. The flowers are hermaphroditic and self-fertile.
Fruiting results in shiny red fruits on a white background, ready to be harvested from August. This tree does not require too much maintenance.

Nectarines can be enjoyed raw, cooked, sweet, savory, flambéed, frozen, or thawed. They pair very well with wine and certain meats, such as duck. They can be found in numerous recipes, including jams, compotes, pastries.

Planting and care

The Snow Baby® Zaisno dwarf Nectarine tree should ideally be planted from September to November. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, in order to moisten the entire root ball by capillary action. Place compost at the bottom of the hole. Install the tree in the hole, fill with soil mixed with potting soil. Gently tamp around the base of the tree as you fill, ensuring that the roots are in close contact with the soil. The root ball should be completely covered. Water thoroughly.

The Snow Baby® Zaisno dwarf Nectarine tree has a semi-pivot root system. It will thrive in fairly deep soils. It also prefers a light and well-draining soil.

Care

Pruning instructions In the following spring after planting, a first training pruning will be welcome. Keep only the branches that will be the tree's framework (about 5 branches). The fruit appears on one-year-old branches. The wood that has borne fruit will not reproduce. For the fruiting pruning, prune the branches that have already borne fruit to 2 buds above the future branching. Remove the branches in the center that are crossing each other and shorten the longest ones that go outward in order to maintain a harmonious silhouette.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time January to February, December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
