Description

The 'Prune d'Ente' Plum Tree is the variety of Agen prune. Vigorous, with abundant and regular production, it produces elongated, reddish-purple fruits. Their flesh is greenish, juicy, very sweet with a hint of cinnamon. They are perfect for drying. Harvest takes place in August and September. The 'Prune d'Ente' Plum Tree is self-fertile and a very good pollinator. It is disease resistant.

The original region of plum trees is believed to be Syria, not China. During the time of Roman hegemony in the region, various local fruits including plums were introduced to Rome. The 'Prune d'Ente' Plum Tree is a hybrid variety, a cross-breeding of Prunus spinosa x Prunus cerasifera varieties. It is the only one authorised in the specifications of the Agen Prune label.

This fruit tree naturally grows up to 6m (20ft) tall at maturity. Its upright silhouette is appreciated. Properly pruned, it will be easy to harvest. It prefers sun or partial shade, sheltered from the wind and grows in all types of rich, moist, deep or even heavy soil, but without limestone. Its leaves are oval, almost oblong, serrated-toothed and slightly pubescent. Flowering occurs in April. The tree is then completely covered with white flowers that appear on the previous year's branches. They are self-fertile. The variety is known for its very good pollination of other plum trees. It produces elongated, reddish-purple fruits. Their flesh is greenish, juicy, very sweet with a hint of cinnamon. They are perfect for drying.

Plums are consumed raw at the base of the tree, in fruit salads, but also in desserts, pastries, as accompaniments to meats and dishes. They are transformed into jams, of course, but also into syrup fruits, compotes. They are also used to make eau-de-vie.

For transportation reasons, our tallest scions may be pruned before shipping. They are suitable for all common training sizes: cordons, espaliers, goblets, half-standards, and low standards, except for tall standards. If you would like more information or advice on training your fruit trees, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, the 'Prune d'Ente' Plum tree thrives in all types of soil - light, rich, neutral or acidic, moist but not excessively wet, and without limestone. Ensure proper drainage in the planting hole by adding a thin layer of gravel. Dig a hole two to three weeks before planting, twice as wide and deep as the pot. On the day of planting, place the tree with its pot in a basin of water, allowing the roots to absorb moisture through capillary action. Add compost to the bottom of the hole. Place the tree in the hole and fill with a mixture of soil and compost. Do not bury the graft union. Firmly tamp down the soil around the base. The root ball should be completely covered. Water generously. In winter, you can add a small handful of wood ash, which is rich in potash, to improve fruiting.

Care

Pruning instructions Only prune as necessary as plum trees become sensitive to wounds, which can serve as entry points for diseases. Apply a healing paste to protect it. Training pruning: it is used to shape the framework of the tree. In the first year, during winter but outside the freezing period, prune the tree in such a way as to obtain 4 to 5 branches oriented outward, like a goblet. Fruiting pruning: after harvesting the plums, and outside the freezing period, remove dead wood and fragile branches. Remove any fruits left on the tree and burn them. Remove any suckers (shoots at the base of the tree).
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time September to December
Soil moisture Tolerant
Disease resistance Good
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
