Description

The Calathea roseopicta 'Royal Standard' is a prized houseplant for its foliage adorned with particularly elegant patterns. Its large ovate leaves, edged with deep green against a silvery-grey centre, bring a beautiful touch of exoticism and sophistication to your interior decor. To ensure it thrives, place this tropical plant in a bright spot, but away from direct sunlight, and maintain high ambient humidity. Regular watering with non-calcareous water is essential to preserve its rather fantastic foliage.

A member of the Marantaceae family, Calathea roseopicta has now been reclassified into the genus Goeppertia and renamed Goeppertia roseopicta. It is also known by the botanical synonyms Maranta roseopicta and Phyllodes roseopicta. Native to the tropical forests of South America, particularly Brazil, it thrives in warm, humid environments, sheltered from direct sunlight. Indoors, to recreate these conditions, it is important to maintain high humidity, water frequently with non-calcareous water, and plant it in a rich, well-draining substrate. Calatheas are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and prefer a stable environment, between 18 and 24°C.

The 'Royal Standard' cultivar is a perennial plant with moderate growth and a bushy habit, typically reaching a height and spread of 60 cm, depending on growing conditions. Its leaves, measuring 20 to 30 cm in length, have a velvety texture and distinctive patterns, with purple undersides, and the plant regularly produces new foliage. Although Calatheas can flower, 'Royal Standard' is primarily valued for its ornamental leaves, as its flowers are subtle and infrequent in indoor cultivation. When they do appear, they are small, white or cream-coloured, sometimes slightly purple-tinged. They grow in compact clusters near the base of the plant, hidden beneath the dense foliage. These flowers have a tubular or campanulate shape.

The Calathea 'Royal Standard' creates a tropical and elegant atmosphere in a living room, bedroom, or even a bright conservatory—just avoid direct sunlight. Placed on a light-wood shelf or in a ceramic pot, it enhances "boho-chic" or minimalist contemporary décors. For a jungle effect, pair it with a Philodendron 'Pink Bikini' for its variegated pink-and-white leaves and a Calathea insignis with its striking patterns. Its natural presence makes it a centrepiece on a low table or in a cosy corner, where its leaves will draw all the attention.

Location

The calathea can find its place in any moderately lit room of the house, away from direct sunlight. However, avoid placing it in a draught or a room that is too dry, as this could damage its leaves. A tropical conservatory with a warm and humid atmosphere would also meet all its needs.

Maintenance and care

Water by soaking once a week, preferably with non-calcareous water at room temperature. Mist regularly 2 to 3 times a week, especially during the heating season. In winter, reduce watering but maintain misting.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, or as soon as the roots fill the pot. Ideally in April or May.
Use a mix of houseplant compost lightened with perlite, place clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (such as NPK 10-10-10), to be applied once a month during the growth period (spring and summer). Reduce in autumn and stop in winter. Reduce in autumn and stop in winter.

Houseplant care

This plant requires attention, particularly regarding moisture and watering. Watch out for foliar spots caused by excess humidity. Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No specific pruning is required; simply remove dry or damaged leaves at their base with clean scissors to encourage new shoots.

Disease and pest advice

The calathea is prone to root rot if overwatered. In case of red spider mite infestation, increase the surrounding humidity and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth.
