Arrived small, it has perfectly recovered and seems to resist everything. It is growing well, we will see how it progresses at the end of summer.

Description

Goniolimon collinum is a relatively recently introduced species in our gardens under the name of the cultivar 'Sea Spray'. The latter is in reality identical to the wild species that can be found in nature, especially along the Bulgarian coasts of the Black Sea where it is not uncommon to also find other species such as Goniolimon tataricum, and G. beesserianum. The hill goniolimon is a vigorous and hardy perennial that produces a delicate white flowering in summer. It emerges from a decorative rosette of bluish-green leaves. The foliage persists in winter. This sunny rock plant eventually forms pretty clumps, without watering or maintenance. Its flower stalks, just like those of statice, are perfect in dried bouquets.

Goniolimon collinum belongs to the Plumbaginaceae family. It is native to southeastern Europe, particularly the Balkan Peninsula and eastern Romania. Comfortable in rocky soils, it has excellent cold resistance (down to -15°C (5°F)). An herbaceous perennial plant, it develops dense rosettes of leaves, close to the ground. It generally reaches 50cm (20in) in height when in flower and gradually spreads like a compact cushion over an area of 50cm (20in) on the ground. In July-August, tall branched floral stems of bluish colour appear, bearing corymbs or light false umbels made up of tiny paper-like flowers. The plant then transforms into a charming white cloud. The foliage is evergreen in winter. The leaves are oval, quite wide, and of a beautiful shiny bluish-green. This plant anchors itself on a buried central caudex, which allows it to store water and nutrients to survive when the soil is dry or very salty. Spontaneous seedlings are possible in light soils.

Goniolimon collinum is a long-lasting perennial, irreplaceable in rock gardens, gravel or raised beds, and sunny borders. It thrives wherever the soil is very well drained, even dry. It tolerates coastal conditions well. Its floral stalks are prized in dried flower arrangements. It can accompany dwarf irises, Anthemis carpatica 'Karpatenschnee', sea thrifts, and dwarf phlox. Its airy flowering, like that of baby's breath, beautifully highlights roses. In a well-drained bed, it can be combined with centaureas (Centaurea atropurpurea or C. pulcherrima, Knautia macedonia), or the majestic Geranium psilostemon, for example.

Planting and care

This cold-resistant plant grows in any well-drained, sandy or rocky soil, preferably in full sun in humid regions. Limestone is well tolerated. Surface dressing the soil with gravel facilitates the appearance of many spontaneous sowings and protects the plant's collar from soil moisture. Once well rooted, it does not require watering in summer, even in dry conditions.
