Description

The 'Stainless Steel' Aconitum is a beautiful hardy herbaceous perennial that flowers from June to August in long clusters of blue flowers shaped like a helmet, hence its nickname 'Jupiter's Helmet'.

Little known, this Aconite reaches a height of 90 cm and produces deciduous, alternate, finely cut grey-green leaves, 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4in) long. The upright stems bear clusters of helmet-shaped flowers, melliferous, steel blue, 40 cm (16in) long. These flowers offer a beautiful contrast between the steel blue hood veined with ultramarine blue and the nearly black stamens. Please note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested (anesthetic), so do not plant it near vegetables or play areas for children.

The 'Stainless Steel' Aconitum grows in deep, moist, humus-rich and well-drained soil, in a sunny or partially shaded location. It tolerates limestone and the addition of compost at planting is recommended. It requires freshness in summer and no stagnant moisture in winter.

The 'Stainless Steel' Aconitum takes a while to establish, but once in place, it forms a superb clump one meter wide. It is perfect in a flowerbed for cutting flowers, along with Echinaceas, Heleniums, or Anemones that flower in autumn.

Tips: Wait until the 5th year to divide them.
