Agapanthus Blue Heaven
African Lily, Lily of the Nile
Very beautiful plant, with a lovely blue colour. It has flowered three times, whereas my old agapanthus, despite having plenty of flowers, only bloom once. Excellent purchase, I recommend this plant. Thank you very much!

Description
The Agapanthus Blue Heaven is a new variety of Agapanthus that is not widely available yet. It has a bright blue colour and has a long flowering period. Its evergreen foliage is ribbon-like and sometimes has a purple tint. In July and again in September-October, stems rise from the foliage and bear magnificent umbels of star-shaped flowers. The blue colour of these flowers is quite extraordinary, reminiscent of wild chicory. This plant is perfect for large pots on the terrace or in small groups near high-traffic areas. However, this collectable plant is relatively easy and should be planted in well-drained soil, in full sun. It should also always have water during its growth period.
Agapanthus belongs to the lily family. The hybrid variety 'Blue Heaven' is a recent introduction which produces a generous clump of linear foliage that is dark green and around 50 cm (19.7 in) high. The foliage remains very ornamental even during winter. The spherical umbels of 30 to 40 flowers rise above the foliage, carried by sturdy stems that are 70 to 90 cm (35.4 in) high. Depending on the region, the flowering period occurs between July and September-October in two distinct waves. The floral buds unfurl into numerous trumpets whose unusual hue is between lavender and cobalt blue. Each petal is marked with a darker central line, ultramarine blue to indigo. The light blue stamens are tipped with almost black anthers, giving the whole plant a truly luminous look that attracts the eye.
This exceptional evergreen variety has moderate hardiness, up to about -10°C. You can plant it in a pot, which can then be stored in winter and placed on a sunny terrace in summer or in the ground, in a warm position with well-draining soil. It is a versatile plant that thrives in various settings, such as by the seaside, in an English cottage, or even in a city garden, as a focal point on a terrace, in an exotic or contemporary style. It pairs well with perennials like Salvia, Rudbeckias, Verbenas, and Oriental Poppies in bright or pastel colours. You can cut the flowers and place them in a vase to bring freshness and originality to the house.

Planting and care
To grow the 'Blue Heaven' Agapanthus successfully, place it in a warm, sunny location protected from winds. The plant should face south. Plant it in rich, moist, well-drained soil to improve its hardiness. Water it regularly during the growing season, about twice a week, but avoid watering it in winter. To protect it from excessive moisture and cold, mulch the base with a layer of leaf mould about 20 cm thick. Also, cover it with mesh or fleece to prevent wind damage. Snow can also serve as an excellent protection against cold weather. Bring the plant indoors to protect it from severe frost in an unheated room if grown in a pot. When planting, place the agapanthus at a depth of 10 cm in a mixture of leaf mould and compost. Once it's established in the ground, avoid disturbing the plant. In autumn, remove the faded leaves. In addition, cut off the spent flower stalks to prevent the plant from exhausting itself by producing seeds.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
