Description

Agapanthus inapertus 'Graskop' is a variety of Agapanthus that is astonishing and dark. The flowering consists of long almost black trumpets that open to a dark blue. Inclined towards the ground, they are carried by sturdy flower stalks that are over 80cm (32in) in height. Ideal in large pots on the terrace, or planted in small groups near high-traffic areas.

Agapanthus inapertus 'Graskop' belongs to the lily family, it is a clone that is only found in the northeastern region of Transvaal, South Africa, near the city of Graskop. This variety thrives in meadows that experience summer rainfall. From spring, a narrow tuft of linear, light green foliage, about 50cm (20in) in height, develops. The spherical umbels of 30 to 40 flowers rise above carried by longer stems, flowering occurs between July and September depending on the region. The long pendulous trumpets, very graphic, are almost black and upright when in bud, then they bend towards the ground as they open to a dark blue.

This deciduous variety is moderately hardy (up to approximately -10°C (14°F)), plant it either in a pot to overwinter and place on a sunny terrace in summer, or in open ground, in a warm exposure and in a cool and well-drained soil. It is a plant that thrives by the seaside, in an English cottage, and even in a city garden. Cut and placed in a vase, the flowers will bring freshness and a lot of originality to the house.

Planting and care

Agapanthus inapertus 'Graskop' is grown in full sun in a warm location, in a protected and south-facing spot. Place it in a rich and moist but well-drained soil to improve its hardiness. Water Agapanthus regularly during the growth period (twice a week) but not in winter. Mulch the base with a layer of dead leaves, about 20cm (8in) thick, covered with mesh to prevent wind damage. Snow also provides good protection against excessive moisture and cold. In a pot, bring the plant indoors to protect it from severe frost, in an unheated room. When planting, place them 10cm (4in) deep in a mixture of leaf soil and compost. Once established in the ground, it is important not to disturb Agapanthus. Remove faded leaves in autumn. Cut back the spent flower stalks to prevent the plant from exhausting itself by producing seeds.
