More information

Choose this agapanthus with blue-violet flowers gathered in umbels of about 10 cm in diameter and carried by sturdy flower stalks, perfect for making bouquets. They emerge in summer above a beautiful tuft of ribbon-like, shiny green leaves, evergreen in mild climates. Not very hardy (-5°C), it is the ideal plant for seaside gardens. It tolerates drought well and performs very well in pots, which is a blessing for less temperate climates. It thrives in the sun in rich and well-drained soil.

Description

Agapanthus 'Sofie' offers blue-violet flowers with a dark blue central line, gathered in umbels about 10 cm in diameter. They rise above the tuft of ribbon-like leaves, which are bright green and carried by robust floral stems. Agapanthus flowers are perfect for making bouquets. This not very hardy (-5 °C), perennial plant is perfect for coastal gardens, where you can grow it in the ground. It tolerates drought well and performs well in containers, which is a great advantage for less favourable climates, where you can overwinter it in a frost-free location. Plant it in full sun in a rich and well-drained soil.

From the Liliaceae family, Agapanthus 'Sofie' was obtained in 2009 in the Netherlands by Catharina Marie for Hoekstra-Arisz. It grows, like all agapanthus, from a short rhizome with fleshy roots and forms a tuft of elongated green leaves that persist in mild climates during winter. The tuft can reach 75 cm in height when flowering, with a spread of 45 cm. In July-August, sometimes as early as June, umbels about 10 cm in diameter appear at the top of robust stems. The flowers are blue-violet, marked by a dark blue central line. It is a floriferous variety that tolerates drought once established.

Place your Agapanthus 'Sofie' in the heart of your flower beds and borders. It also performs well in containers, especially in cold regions due to its low hardiness (-5°C). In this case, you can overwinter it in a bright and frost-free location. In the garden, combine it with white-flowered agapanthus with light blue flowers like Agapanthus Phantom or create a blue flower bed by mixing climbing plants, bushes, and perennials, placing Clematis Arabella and Caryopteris Sunny Blue with golden foliage in the background, Agapanthus Sophie in the centre, and Geranium Irish Blue and Salvia nemorosa Sensation Deep Blue at the edge of the flower bed. The flowers of Agapanthus Sofie are perfect for creating lovely bouquets.

Planting and care

Agapanthus Sofie loves the sun. Plant it in rich and well-drained soil. Its hardiness is better in a soil that doesn't retain too much water. Once established, it tolerates summer drought fairly well. However, its flowering will be more abundant if you water it regularly during the growing season (twice a week). Not very hardy (-5°C), planting it in the ground is reserved for mild climate regions and coastal areas. Mulch the base with a thick layer of dead leaves. In less favourable regions, plant it in a pot that you can bring indoors into a cold greenhouse or unheated conservatory during winter, or protect it with a winter fleece. Once planted, avoid disturbing your agapanthus. Cut back faded stems as they appear. Remove dead leaves in spring.
