Superb variety, planted last autumn in clay soil. It forms a dense and brightly rostrate carpet of 50cm (20in), perfect under my hellebores.

Description

Ajuga reptans Variegata is an excellent groundcover, which forms a dense mat of grey-green leaves margined with cream that produces blue-violet blooms in short spikes.

Of rapid growth, this variegated creeping bugle propagates itself through its stolons, but it is also the least vigorous of the variety. It develops rosettes of evergreen leaves, oblong, 5 to 6 cm (2in) long, which are grey-green margined with cream. From the month of May, small spikes of blue-violet flowers bloom for over a month and are carried on short peduncles at 20cm (8in) in height.

Ajuga reptans Variegata is undemanding regarding the type of soil as long as it is moist and in a semi-shaded position. Do not let the soil dry out in winter, otherwise the foliage will become crisped and lose its beautiful colours.

Variegated Creeping Bugle is ideal for dressing the base of trees and shrubs, in pots or shaded beds in association with spring bulbs or dead nettles.
