Description

Ajuga reptans is a creeping perennial that spreads rapidly through stolons. This evergreen plant produces short, whorled spikes from May to July, reaching a height of up to 15 cm (6in). These spikes are composed of an abundance of labiate flowers (the corolla has two lip-shaped lobes). These flowers are blue and measure 10 to 12 mm (1in).

Also known as the Creeping Bugle, the upright stems of this Ajuga bear rosette leaves. Measuring 10 cm (4in) in length, they are slightly dentate. Its evergreen foliage adds winter interest to the garden. The leaves are purple-blue. This foliage makes the plant a magnificent groundcover. It reaches a height of 15 cm (6in) at maturity. Native to Europe, the Caucasus, and Iran, it is very hardy.

Bugle can be found in borders, rockeries, flower beds, as well as in damp areas such as along streams. It also thrives at the base of bushes, in woodland edges, and hedges. It can be invasive, but it is easily controlled. Ajuga pairs well with bellflowers, hellebores, Lamium maculatum, Japanese primroses, and heathers. Its foliage complements that of the hybrid Geranium Patricia. In the Middle Ages, Ajuga reptans atropurpurea was known for its medicinal properties treating haemorrhages and diarrhoea.

Planting and care

This easy-to-grow plant can grow partial shade. It is a species that can even be grown under dense shade. Do not place it in direct sunlight, which could burn the foliage. Plant Ajuga in any moist, normal to poor, humus-rich soil. It can be planted in autumn (September to November) or in spring (March to April). Prepare a planting hole of 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in) x 20 cm (8in). The top of the root ball should be covered with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Water generously to eliminate air pockets. Water regularly for a few weeks if the weather is dry to encourage plant establishment. Ajuga may be susceptible to powdery mildew.
