More information

A robust species, of impressive size, with a beautiful spreading habit. Its leaves are broad, pointed, thick, with a glossy dark green upper surface and a distinctly purple underside. Like other Alocasias, this foliage plant thrives in bright light without direct sunlight, a well-draining soil kept slightly moist, and a humid atmosphere (60-70% humidity), which it will find near a humidifier or among a group of tropical plants. It requires particular attention to avoid overwatering and excessively dry air.

Description

Alocasia wentii is a rather robust species of Elephant Ear. The plant develops large, glossy, slightly wrinkled, dark green leaves in an elongated heart shape. The underside of the leaves has a beautiful purplish hue. This indoor plant, when mature and in its preferred conditions, forms a specimen reaching 1.5m in height with a lovely spreading habit. It thrives in bright light, without direct sunlight, and appreciates good ambient humidity.

Alocasia wentii belongs to the Araceae family, like Monstera and other Philodendrons. It is a botanical species native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, particularly in India, China, and the Philippines. This plant, which grows naturally in rich, moist, and well-drained soils, has given rise to variegated cultivars of great ornamental value. Alocasia wentii grows slowly but can reach 1.5m in height and 1m in width at maturity, under good light and humidity conditions. Its upright habit and elongated, undulate, heart-shaped leaves give it an elegant silhouette and a very exotic appearance.

The best position for your Alocasia is in a bright room but away from direct sunlight, which could scorch its leaves. The air humidity should be kept high (around 60-70%) to prevent its leaves from drying out. A humidifier or grouping it with other tropical plants can help recreate this environment. Its growing substrate should remain slightly moist but not waterlogged, as Alocasia roots dislike water stagnation as much as drought. The ideal temperature for this plant is between 15 and 27°C, ideally around 20°C.

Alocasia wentii fits naturally into a tropical setting, where it becomes a focal point. Pair it with other plants from the Araceae family, such as Monsteras or Philodendrons, which require similar light and humidity conditions. This combination enhances the lush and exotic atmosphere of a living room. To maintain its beauty, regularly dust its leaves and watch for mealybugs or other parasitic pests. With its unique foliage, Alocasia wentii is an ideal choice to enrich conservatories and complement interiors of all styles.

Maintenance and care

Watering tips

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface, without leaving stagnant water in the saucer. Misting regularly helps maintain some ambient humidity. Avoid excess water which can lead to root rot.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 2 to 3 years, in spring.
Create a mix of universal compost, coconut fibre and perlite, with clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot to improve drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants (NPK 20-20-20) every 2 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, diluted to half the recommended dose.

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to maintain their shine and prevent dust buildup.
Remove yellowed, stained, or damaged leaves.

Disease and pest advice

For mealybugs, use cotton wool soaked in 70% alcohol to remove them manually. Shower the foliage to deter red spider mites and increase air humidity by misting or using a humidifier.
