Description

The Arabis caucasica 'Plena' is a double-flowered version of the vigorous rock cress. This plant is a perennial that makes for effective ground cover against invasive species. It has tiny, evergreen green foliage and a fragrant, white and double spring flowering, which makes it particularly decorative. It is easy to grow in well-drained soil and is irreplaceable when it comes to covering walls, climbing slopes, and covering the base of hedges.

The Basket of Silver, also known as Arabis caucasica 'Plena', is a slow-growing plant that belongs to the Brassicaceae family. It has fragrant flowers that are 1 cm (1in) in diameter and are clustered above grey-green, velvety foliage. The leaves are oval, serrated, and measure 3 cm (1in) in length. This evergreen and spreading perennial plant is ideal for a rock garden and can also be used as a ground cover along borders, on a slope, or as a wall cap. It grows to be 15 cm (6in) in height and has a minimum spread of 45 cm (18in).

Arabis caucasica 'Plena' is undemanding and can cover the base of shrubs or hedges, even in partial shade. It effectively prevents the appearance of weeds and can cover a significant area in a few years. However, it should be avoided in a well-maintained rock garden where it may harm more fragile plants. The plant blooms from April to June, making it a lovely addition to a garden. It is a perfect match for tulips and other spring bulbs and can create a beautiful 'drapery' on stones and walls.

Planting and care

Rockcress thrives in well-drained soil, whether rocky or gravelly, acidic, neutral, or slightly chalky. You can plant them from spring to autumn, but water them regularly to help them grow. To prevent any problems, ensure neighbouring plants and weeds don't crowd them during planting. Although they are very robust, they grow slowly. After they flower, use shears to prune them to encourage denser growth.
