Description
Asarum europaeum, commonly known as European wild ginger or Cabaret, is a small native groundcover perennial grown for its glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage. Its rounded leaves gradually overlap to form a low, regular carpet, ideal for planting in areas where lawn grass struggles to grow. Its curious flowers, hidden beneath the foliage, can be spotted in spring. Very hardy and undemanding once established, this wild ginger is suited to shaded areas that do not dry out too much in summer.
Asarum europaeum belongs to the Aristolochiaceae family. It is an evergreen herbaceous perennial: its leafy stems remain throughout winter. This botanical species is native to a vast region stretching from Europe to central Siberia. In France, it grows spontaneously in cool woodland, particularly on humus-rich, slightly chalky soils. The plant spreads by means of creeping stems and superficial rootstocks that root into the litter layer of dead leaves. It establishes slowly, but the clumps eventually merge to form dense cover. It reaches 10 to 15 cm in height and spreads 30 to 45 cm. Each short shoot bears one or two pairs of long-petiolate leaves. Their lamina, 5 to 8 cm wide, resembles a kidney or rounded heart. It is leathery, dark green, traversed by lighter veins and particularly shiny. From March to May, solitary flowers appear, with a corolla measuring 10 to 15 mm long, borne almost directly on the ground. Initially greenish, they turn reddish-brown or dark purple. Their floral envelope forms a small bell ending in three pointed lobes. Hidden beneath the leaves, these flowers are pollinated by small insects attracted to their peppery scent. The seeds bear a nutritious appendix sought after by ants, which thus aid in their dispersal. The foliage and rootstocks also release a spicy fragrance when bruised.
European wild ginger is used in a shaded border, beneath deciduous shrubs, or in a woodland-inspired bed. A group of at least five young plants will achieve a more uniform cover more quickly. It can be paired with other cool-shade perennials such as Hepatica nobilis, Polygonatum odoratum, Dryopteris affinis ‘Crispa’ or Eranthis hyemalis ‘Schwefelglanz’.

Planting and care
Plant Asarum europaeum from March to May or September to October, in partial shade or shade. Filtered light beneath deciduous trees suits it better than very dry shade under conifers. Loosen the soil and incorporate well-rotted compost or leaf mould. In clay soil, add well-decomposed organic matter to improve aeration without drying out the ground. The asarabacca tolerates chalk, but also grows in neutral or slightly acidic soil. Allow seven to nine young plants per square metre to gradually achieve a homogeneous, regular carpet. Water during the first two summers as soon as the soil dries out in depth. A layer of shredded dead leaves maintains moisture and mimics the forest litter layer it appreciates. Pruning is limited to removing damaged leaves at the end of winter. Watch out for slugs and snails during establishment. Clumps can be divided in early spring, keeping several leaves and a fragment of rootstock on each division.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
