Campanula carpatica Mini Marvels Midnight

Campanula carpatica Mini Marvels™ ‘Midnight’, a small Carpathian bellflower that is perennial and carpet-forming, has been selected for its long, deep violet flowering and particularly compact growth. Its bell-shaped flowers follow on from May-June until the end of summer and almost completely cover the foliage. Perfectly hardy and easy to grow, it is a reliable choice for borders, rock gardens and containers.

This variety belongs to the Campanulaceae family. The species Campanula carpatica, commonly called Carpathian bellflower, is a herbaceous perennial native to the Carpathian Mountains in central and eastern Europe (Czech Republic-Slovakia, Romania and Ukraine), where it colonises limestone scree, cliffs and stony meadows at medium and high altitudes.
The cultivar Mini Marvels™ ‘Midnight’ is a horticultural selection from the American nursery Walters Gardens, distributed in the Proven Winners range from 2025. It is part of the MINI MARVELS™ series, which brings together several Carpathian bellflowers that are particularly compact, 15 to 20 cm tall : ‘Midnight’ bears very deep purple flowers.
The plant develops a cushion-shaped clump. Its leaves are heart-shaped to rounded, finely toothed, 2 to 4 cm long, bright green to dark green and slightly glossy. In temperate climates, the foliage is semi-evergreen: it remains present throughout winter in regions with mild winters. The fine flowering stems are tightly packed together; they carry bell-shaped flowers, 2-3 cm wide, facing upwards.
Mini Marvels™ ‘Midnight’ grows quickly, reaching its mature size within two to three seasons. It is very hardy, withstanding temperatures well below –20 °C in well-drained soil, but doesn't like stagnant moisture in winter.

Campanula carpatica Mini Marvels™ ‘Midnight’ is an alpine plant that dislikes both very hot climates and excessively dry summers. Above all, it is an excellent plant for rock gardens and borders. It will quickly fill gaps in paving or an old wall, as well as the tops of low walls. This small plant forms a lovely groundcover at the base of roses and other shrubs, provided it is exposed to the sun. It also grows very well in troughs or pots. To accompany it, consider other rock garden perennials: Phlox subulata ‘Scarlet Flame’, blue fescue ‘Elijah Blue’ and Campanula carpatica ‘Clips’ white. They create durable, easy-care carpets.
