More information

This coreopsis combines an exceptionally long flowering period, from May to the first frosts, with good hardiness. Very bright and contrasting, its flowers are creamy-white with a black eye highlighted by a lemon-yellow halo. They bloom above compact, yet flexible vegetation, adorned with very fine dark green foliage. Its undemanding nature and love of the sun make it suitable for well-exposed slopes and light, fairly dry soils. It is also a remarkable perennial in a pot and an excellent cut flower.

Description

Coreopsis 'Fool's Gold' is a very pretty variety, delicate and contrasting. It brightens up the garden with its countless simple daisy-like flowers in cream white, with a black eye surrounded by a lemon yellow halo. The flowers bloom from May until the first frost on a clump of stems adorned with fine dark green leaves. This hardy and understated perennial appreciates a sunny exposure, ideal for sunny slopes, raised beds, or any location with light and well-drained soil. Perfect in a pot, it also makes an excellent cut flower.

Coreopsis 'Fool's Gold' belongs to the Asteraceae family. Its wild ancestor, the Whorled Coreopsis, is native to the plains of Central America, Mexico, and the southeastern United States. 'Fool's Gold' is a compact cultivar selected for its exceptional flowering duration. This rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with a woody base has a spreading, branching, tufted habit, with a flexible and airy appearance. It reaches about 40 cm in height with a spread of 40 cm. Flowering begins in May and continues until the first frost. The 3.5 cm diameter head flowers bloom from round buds and are arranged in whorls of 3 along the thin stems. The dark green foliage is composed of 6 cm long leaves, finely divided into linear leaflets. The plant slowly spreads through an intermingling of thin, non-running rhizomes. The foliage is deciduous, absent in winter.

Coreopsis 'Fool's Gold' is a simple and charming perennial, with multiple uses. Ideal in a rockery or on a poor slope, it pairs perfectly with wallflowers, Damask nigellas, and wild flax. In an herbaceous border, it harmonises well with lavenders or snapdragons. In a pot or container, this plant blooms abundantly from the first year. For a flowery summer, in the ground or a large pot, with very little watering, it can be associated with Calamintha glandulosa and Nepeta 'Dawn to Dusk'. In addition to brightening up the garden, it is an excellent cut flower to liven up the home.

Planting and care

The perennial Coreopsis 'Fool's Gold' hates winter moisture and heavy soils. These plants require full sun, even scorching, to flower well. They prefer moist to dry, light, porous, gravelly or sandy soil, always very well-drained, slightly acidic, neutral, slightly chalky, even if poor. They will also adapt well in humus-bearing and damp soil, provided that the drainage is perfect. In such conditions, they flower and live long. To promote reblooming, remove faded flowers, especially at the end of August.
