Description

Coreopsis grandiflora 'Badengold' is a robust variety of Tickseed, also known as Coreopsid. This beautiful perennial is distinguished by its very large single flowers in the shape of daisies, with a vibrant dark yellow colour and an orange centre, which bloom throughout the summer on an elegant plant of impressive stature, both in flower beds and bouquets. This undemanding and generous perennial thrives in the sun, in light and well-drained soil.

The grandiflora Coreopsis belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is native to North America, from California to New Mexico (all states to the east) and up to the Great Lakes. 'Badengold' is a cultivar with large single heads, forming a slightly loose rounded basket-like habit. This rhizomatous perennial plant forms a clump that reaches a height of 90cm (35in), with a diameter of 40cm (16in), which may sometimes require staking in windy or rainy climates. The flowering period is from June to August.  The solitary heads, measuring 6cm (2in) in diameter, are carried on slightly hairy stems. The foliage, of a beautiful intense green colour, is deciduous. The opposite lanceolate leaves, sometimes incised at the base, almost sessile (without petiole), measure 10cm (4in) in length. This perennial spreads quite rapidly through rhizomes.

The 'Badengold' Tickseed is not tolerant of winter wetness and heavy soils. This plant requires full sun to flower well. The Grandiflora Coreopsis is a versatile perennial. It will thrive in a raised flower bed or on a slope, alongside wallflowers, love-in-a-mist, and wild flax, in a herbaceous border with Perovskia, Gaura, santolina, or blue Agapanthus for a striking contrast. It is perfect for planting in a meadow or a slightly wild area of the garden. This plant blooms continuously from the first year. For a beautiful summer display, both in the ground and in containers, with very little water, it can be paired with Nepeta grandiflora 'Wild Cat' and Elsholtzia stauntonii which blooms in autumn. It is also a lovely flower for summer bouquets, like a little sun in the house.

Planting and care

The grandiflora Coreopsis and its varieties dislike winter wetness and heavy soils. This plant requires full sun to flower well. It prefers light and well-drained soil, porous, gravelly or sandy, always very well-drained, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline. Under such conditions, these plants bloom and live for a long time. To promote re-flowering, it is preferable to remove faded flowers regularly, especially in July to promote autumn re-flowering. This operation will also extend the life of the plant. Rejuvenate exhausted clumps by division, approximately every 3 years.
