Description
Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray', commonly called Tickseed, is a perennial plant with breathtakingly beautiful, bright yellow double or semi-double daisy-like flowers that bloom all summer long. It has a compact habit, which makes it an excellent choice for the front of borders and herbaceous borders. It is a low-maintenance plant that thrives in sunlight and well-draining soil. It is also an elegant and easy-to-grow plant that can even be grown in containers.
Coreopsis grandiflora is a plant commonly found in North America, ranging from California to New Mexico and up to the Great Lakes. It's a perennial plant that forms a rounded basket-like shrub with beautiful, intense green foliage that sheds seasonally. It grows quickly and spreads through rhizomes.
From June through August, the plant produces solitary heads that measure 10cm in diameter on slightly hairy stems. 'Sunray' is a cultivar of Coreopsis grandiflora with double to semi-double flowers that are shorter than the typical variety.
The leaves are lanceolate and opposite, measuring 10 cm long. They're often incised at the base and almost sessile. The flowering period is from June to August.
Sunray Coreopsis is a plant that requires specific conditions to grow and bloom well. It prefers soil that is porous, gravelly, or sandy and that is moist, well-drained, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline. This plant does not do well in heavy soils or during winter moisture. It needs full sun to bloom properly.
To keep the plant healthy and blooming, it's best to remove faded flowers regularly and, in July, encourage autumn reblooming. By doing this, you can help prolong the life of the plant and keep it looking beautiful.
Coreopsis grandiflora is a perennial plant that can be used in various ways. It can be planted in a rock garden or on a slope with other plants like wallflowers, love-in-a-mist, and wild flax. It can also be grown in a herbaceous border along with other plants like Teucrium chamaedrys or x lucidrys, thyme, and santolines. The plant is perfect for naturalising a meadow or a wild area of a garden. When planted in a pot or container, it blooms continuously from the first year. For a beautiful summer display in the ground or large pots, it can be paired with Calamintha glandulosa and Nepeta 'Dawn to dusk' and requires very little water. It is also an excellent choice for summer bouquets, adding a warm and cheerful touch to the house.

Planting and care
To grow Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray' successfully, it needs well-drained, sandy or rocky soil and full sun. If the soil is heavy and damp, treat it as an annual plant. To keep the plant healthy, divide the shrub every three years. You can also extend its lifespan by removing faded flowers regularly and promoting autumn regrowth in July. In September, trim the foliage to strengthen the base before winter. When grown under these conditions, Coreopsis grandiflora 'Sunray' will bloom and give you years of enjoyment.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
