I bought 2 different vine-plants. The Vine-plant, Lucky Melody, received in a bucket had no visibility of the young plant. I planted it but nothing grew except for weeds. Disappointing! The other Vine-plant, Ageratina Eupatorium, was magnificent.

Description

Eupatorium rugosum Braunlaub or Ageratina altissima has impressive foliage with large green leaves, tinged with brown at the beginning of the growing season. These leaves are deciduous and give a bushy shape to the plant.

On tall and flexible reddish stems, clusters of small white flowers tinged with brown bloom from August to September. Sometimes called soft-leaved Eupatorium, it can reach a height of 1 metre (3 feet) at maturity. It is native to the eastern part of North America.

This plant, also known as Eupatorium ageratoides Braunlaub, is very hardy and vigorous, and it is melliferous (attracts butterflies and bees). Its decorative flowers can be used for making bouquets. The plant can be planted as a specimen, as a background plant, or in flower beds, baskets, and even along the edge of a pond.

Planting and care

Eupatorium rugosum Braunlaub thrives in full sun as well as partial shade. Plant it in ordinary soil, even chalky soil, that is moist and well-drained. It is a very water-hungry plant. Water it generously during the growing season as it wilts quickly when deprived of rain. Remove faded flowers to prolong its flowering. After flowering, lightly prune any untidy stems. Protect young shoots that may be damaged by late frosts.
