The two baby's breath plants arrived more than exhausted and eaten by a slug, as well as the oriental poppy.

Description

Gypsophila repens 'Alba' is a perennial creeping plant with evergreen mid-blue-green leaves. In summer, it is covered with a cloud of small star-shaped white flowers, giving the plant a spreading appearance. It is a drought-tolerant perennial, ideal for rock gardens, in the gaps between walls, on dry embankments, or in containers.

Gypsophila belongs to the Caryophyllaceae family. The mature size of this variety will not exceed 25cm (10in) in height, forming a spreading cushion that expands year after year. The flowering occurs from May to August if the soil remains slightly moist, in the form of numerous small flowers with five white petals. The flowers are arranged in cymes, creating an aesthetic and misty effect. The compound and opposite leaves are glabrous and measure 1 to 3cm (1in). They are carried by creeping stems.

This perennial is perfect for dry and rocky soil. It is not affected by limestone and can easily be planted in wall crevices and paving gaps. You can also include it in your flower pots and containers, alongside sedums, for example. It can be placed next to salvias, old roses, or gauras in flower beds. The airy appearance of the small flowers particularly enhances perennials with large blooms. It plays its role as a ground cover perfectly on sunny embankments.

Planting and care

Plant Gypsophila 'Alba' in deep, porous, dry to moist and especially well-drained soil. Limestone or neutral soil will be suitable. Excess moisture in winter can greatly harm it by causing root rot. Gravel-rich soil yields good results. This plant requires a very sunny but not scorching exposure. It does not like to be moved, as it has a fragile fleshy pivot root, and for this reason, its planting location must be carefully chosen. Prune the plant after flowering.
