Planting and care

Plant Helleborus × ericsmithii from September to November in mild climates, or from March to April in cold, damp climates. Choose morning sun, partial shade, or dappled shade; avoid full, burning sun, waterlogged soils, and icy wind corridors. Loosen the soil deeply and mix it with mature compost, leaf mould, and gravel if the soil retains water. Keep the collar level with the soil, as planting too deeply delays flowering. Water regularly for the first year, then only during prolonged dry spells. Mulch in autumn with dead leaves or mature compost without covering the heart of the clump. Avoid moving an established plant, as its fleshy roots re-establish slowly. Its hardiness reaches approximately -15°C in well-drained soil; stagnant water in winter damages the stump more than dry cold.
