Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Siloam David Kirchhoff' is distinguished by its large, round and full flowers, of a deep purple-pink colour with a soft pink central halo and a green to golden-yellow throat. Its petals with undulated edges, bordered with yellow, add to its charm. These bright flowers bloom for a long period on an elegant abundant foliage. It is a problem-free perennial that will thrive anywhere in full sun or partial shade.

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are deciduous, sometimes semi-evergreen and hardy perennial plants. The 'Siloam David Kirchhoff' variety was obtained in 1992 by Jeff & Elizabeth Salter at their Rollingwood nursery in Florida, United States. It forms a fairly dense clump that reaches a height of 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24 in), with a relative spread of 50 cm (20 in). Hemerocallis tend to spread a little when they like the soil. The flowers measure approximately 14 cm (6 in) in diameter. The petals of this variety are thick, wide and slightly wavy, with well-undulated edges. Each flower lasts only one day, but  flowering renews continuously over a beautiful period between June and September. The stems are robust and adorned with numerous buds. The foliage is abundant, linear, bright green and deciduous. Hemerocallis are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots that tolerate dry soils, but are more opulent and floriferous in fresh soil.

Very easy to grow, these plants thrive in both shade and sun. Some of them can be slightly invasive, so do not hesitate to divide the clumps every four or five years, preferably in autumn, after flowering. Hemerocallis is often called the "perfect perennial plant" because of its vibrant colours and its ability to tolerate any type of environment, but also due to its lack of modesty: it displays a beautiful exuberance that goes well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your flower beds. All summer bulb flowers can be planted together with Hemerocallis. 'Siloam David Kirchhoff' will fit perfectly in the setting of a romantic garden, with campanulas, penstemons, perennial flaxes or phloxes installed alongside. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) in depth should be used and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they brighten up salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Siloam David Kirchhoff' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, so there is no need to treat it and rodents are not interested in it. Daylilies thrive equally well in partial shade and in full sun, with 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight being sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. Do not plant them too closely to each other if you are planting several at once, as the gaps will quickly be filled up. For a few weeks after planting, it is a good idea to keep the soil fairly moist. It is preferable to divide the clumps in autumn, after flowering.
