Description

Daylily or Hemerocallis 'Startle' is a hybrid with large flowers. The petals are thick and have very undulate edges. It is a particularly colourful variety, with a round flower that is dark purple-pink, like velvet, and edged with creamy white. The chartreuse-yellow throat lights up the whole flower. This variety maintains its colour throughout the summer. The sturdy stems make it an excellent choice for cut flowers. The daylily is a trouble-free flower, guaranteed to succeed. Invite it into your garden today!

The Hemerocallis genus belongs to the Liliaceae family. They are perennial and hardy plants with deciduous foliage and are sometimes semi-evergreen. The 'Startle' variety grows in clumps, reaching 70 cm (28 in) in height, with a spread of 50 cm (20 in). The flowers measure about 12 cm (5 in) in diameter; they are round and quite thick. Each flower lasts only one day, but flowering continuously renews throughout the summer. Daylilies are plants with short rhizomes and fleshy roots.

Very easy to grow, daylilies thrive in both shade and sun. They have a reputation for being the "perfect perennial plants", due to their vibrant colours and their ability to tolerate any type of environment, and also because of their lack of modesty: they display a beautiful exuberance that blends well with other perennials. Plant them in generous clumps at the back of your borders. All summer bulb flowers can be planted alongside daylilies. All plants in the garden are welcome, and also consider grasses, with their soft and light habit. The unique colours of the 'Startle' variety will brighten up your summers. On a balcony or terrace, large pots of at least 30 cm (12 in) deep should be used, and dwarf varieties should be chosen. The flowers are edible: they add a touch of colour to salads and garnish desserts.

Planting and care

Plant your Hemerocallis 'Startle' in good garden soil that is not too clayey and that is enriched with humus and compost. In these conditions, your perennial will have good tolerance to summer droughts and will not suffer from winter frosts. Very easy to grow, this variety is not susceptible to parasites or diseases, and so there is no need to treat it. Rodents are also not interested in it. Daylilies thrive in both shade and sun, and 4 to 5 hours of daily sunlight will be sufficient. Plant by burying the collar 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2 in) below the surface. If you plant multiple daylilies, make sure not to place them too closely together, as the gaps will quickly be filled up. For a few weeks after planting, it is advisable to keep the soil moist. It is best to divide the clumps in autumn, after flowering.
