Description

'Timeless Orange' Heuchera is a very recent variety of heuchera that is hard to resist. Its purple-double foliage changes from pumpkin orange to olive green mixed with orange, and then to bright red in winter, creating a symphony of autumn colours throughout the year. Its delicate floral stems bear a mist of tiny flowers in summer, not white or pink, but a surprisingly soft orange. Forming compact tufts in vibrant colours, this small perennial works wonders as a border plant or in flower pots on the terrace or balcony.

'Timeless Orange' Heuchera is part of a new series of hybrid heucheras selected for their compact habit and fantastic colours. This small perennial belongs to the Saxifragaceae family. It will reach approximately 25 cm (10in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in width, forming a tight tuft. The foliage is the plant's main asset: round and lobed, its glossy leaves change colour depending on their maturity, throughout the seasons and temperatures. In spring, the young leaves are a beautiful bright orange. They gradually turn green, while retaining beautiful pink-orange to salmon hues. In summer, the dominant colour is coppery yellow, which gives way to a rich and vibrant red in winter. The flowering, light and airy, begins in June and continues until August. These are long spikes adorned with tiny orange flowers that dance in the wind, giving a blurred appearance to this most poetic flowering. It is this movement that is difficult to capture on canvas that earned heucheras the nickname "painter's despair," which they share with certain saxifrages. The foliage is decorative almost all year round; it will persist if the winter is not too harsh.

'Timeless Orange' Heuchera can be planted in the ground in a flower bed, as a border plant, in a slightly shaded and cool rockery, or in a pot. When planted in a flower bed, this heuchera brings dynamism and colour to the garden for most of the year. Pair it with hostas, lady's mantle, small grasses (Carex), and ferns, for example. Also, combine it with varieties of pink, purple, or caramel colour, with the blue flowers of perennial geraniums or Caucasian forget-me-nots (Brunnera), the only shade it truly lacks, as it will perfectly complement it. Consider using heucheras to fill your flower pots, containers, and window boxes, along with geraniums, for example. Good cut flowers, the slender bells of this plant bring a lightness to bouquets.

Planting and care

Easy to maintain, the 'Timeless Orange' heuchera thrives in all moist but well-drained soils. It tolerates partial shade but can also handle sunny locations outside of the hottest hours. It does not grow well in the Mediterranean region, which is too dry and hot in summer. You should plant it in loose soil that is rich in humus, considering adding mulch if necessary. Water it during dry periods, especially in summer. It prefers well-draining soil with rocks both in and above the ground. Sandy and poor soils should be avoided. Also, keep it away from vigorous perennial plants. Heucheras have relatively shallow root systems, so you should plant them slightly deeper than the crown (the base of the foliage). After a few years of growth or when dividing them, you should replant them slightly deeper, making sure to remove any lignified parts.
