Hosta Paul Revere

Hosta 'Paul Revere' is another beautiful variety derived from the famous Patriot, and undoubtedly one of the best in the category of whites and greens. Its foliage is magnificent, composed of undulate cup-shaped leaves bordered by green flames around a wide cream-white centre. They gather in a tightly packed clump with a regular appearance that is adorned with pretty pale lavender flowers in summer. It is a medium-sized, vigorous, reliable, and hardy hosta, ideal for embellishing cool and shady spots in the garden or on the patio. Easy to grow in any damp soil, in partial shade or shade.

Hosta 'Paul Revere' is a deciduous herbaceous plant, which is very hardy, whose vegetation emerges from the ground in spring. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It has a fairly slow growth but a good lifespan, and this variety forms a beautiful tuft of leaves reaching about 40 cm (16in) in height and 70 cm (28in) in width, depending on the growing conditions. Its leaves are lanceolate with cordate bases, smooth margins, and tapered, pointed tips. Their lamina, thick and slightly cupped, is traversed by veins that give it a slightly plicate appearance. Flower stems emerge from the centre of its variegated foliage in July-August.  These stems are about 50 cm (20in) tall and bear racemes of non-fragrant bell-shaped flowers, mauve in colour.

Hostas like damp, well-drained, and rich soils, these plants dislike drought and scorching exposures. A position exposed to the afternoon sun should be avoided as it can burn the leaves of these perennials. With their generous and decorative foliage, hostas are perfect as groundcover, in borders, or in partially shaded or shaded, flower beds. Mix hostas together, associate them with ferns, and other low-growing groundcover perennials such as creeping bugles and lamiums. This way, you will enhance the shaded and slightly moist parts of the garden by creating a pleasant haven for the summer. Hostas also thrive in pots that should be placed in partial shade and watered regularly. Around a pond, plant them with persicarias, carex, and astilbes.

Most of the species widespread in our gardens have been introduced from Japan. Edible, hostas are called urui in Japan where they are commonly consumed.
