Planting and care

Native to Asia, these perennials grow spontaneously in shady and moist places spread through their running underground rootstocks. They can be very invasive in waterlogged soils along rivers or ponds. In our garden, we plant them in the shade, at the foot of large trees, and in this location, the relatively dry conditions limit their growth. It's a shame that the foliage disappears in winter because this plant would otherwise be an excellent year-round ground cover.
