Description

The variety of 'Cascade Springs' Garden Iris measures 1m (3ft) in height. It bears washed blue petals. It is delicately scented.

Everyone knows the Iris germanica, which has become world famous thanks to the paintings of Van Gogh and Monet. It owes its popularity to its unique design.

Its wide rigid, sword-shaped leaves contrast with crumpled, multicolored flowers perched high up. The flowers have the particularity of forming three large upright petals and three silky and trailing sepals, called "beard". The flowering lasts a few weeks in May/June. This Iris has large fleshy rhizomes creeping on the ground. It likes light, heat, and light and well-drained soils. It is not afraid of cold or summer drought, its enemy is humidity, especially in heavy soils. Superb in a sunny bed, it is also highly appreciated for making bouquets.

Very resistant, it must be exposed to full sun, in rather dry and well-drained soil.

Place the 'Cascade Springs' Iris, in a bed or border, in the company of yarrow, Alliums, Stipas or roses. It is better to scatter them in groups of 3 or alone instead of creating homogeneous iris beds.

Planting and care

The 'Cascade Springs' iris should be planted shallowly, with the rhizome exposed at ground level. Add sand if the soil is too heavy or wet, and place the rhizomes on small mounds. Ensure good drainage to prevent the irises from rotting. During summer, this iris should be watered 1 to 2 times a month. At the end of flowering, they should be pruned by cutting the flower stems to 10cm (4in) above the ground. Damaged leaves should only be removed in autumn. It is not recommended to provide too much nitrogen as it weakens the plant and increases the number of leaves at the expense of flowers. Taller flower stalks become brittle. The iris can be susceptible to heterosporiosis, a disease characterized by oval brown spots. To prevent it, treat the irises with Bordeaux mixture at the beginning of the growing season. Every 4 years in summer after flowering, divide the clumps by pulling up the entire plant. Transplanting should be done in an area without irises for at least a year. Take the most beautiful young plants from the rhizome, usually those on the outer edge.
