Iris germanica Point à la Ligne - Bearded Iris

The iris ‘Point à la Ligne’ is an intermediate bearded iris that offers a very graphic contrast in spring. Its pure white flowers, highlighted by a fine purple border, bring a beautiful freshness to spring borders. You can incorporate it into white, mauve, violet-blue or silver displays.

Intermediate bearded irises form a group between dwarf irises and tall bearded irises. Their height is between 41 and 70 cm. They flower after the dwarf irises, but before or at the start of the season of the tall bearded irises. Their flower stems are shorter than those of the tall irises and carry well-proportioned flowers. 'Point à la Ligne' reaches about 50 cm in flower. Its flower stems bear several buds, which open successively from top to bottom. The plant generally does not need staking in a garden that is not too windy.

This iris belongs to the Iridaceae family; it is a rhizomatous perennial that resprouts each year from a fleshy, horizontal rhizome that emerges partially from the soil. Its leaves are glaucous green, long, narrow, pointed, and arranged in a fan shape. They persist more or less in winter depending on the climate. Flowering occurs between late April and May, in the middle of the intermediate iris season. The flowers display a discreet plicata pattern. In ‘Point à la Ligne’, the three upright petals are white, edged with a fine purple border. The three trailing sepals are also white, with a very narrow, regular purple border. The beards are navy blue to dark purple-blue, short, dense, and clearly visible against the white background. The clump expands slowly through its rhizomes.

'Point à la Ligne’ was raised by Richard Cayeux, registered in 2018 and introduced in 2019. Its seedling number is 11 03 B. It is the result of a cross between ‘Mariposa Autumn’ and ‘Fairy Ring’. 

'Point à la Ligne’ can be placed at the front of a border, in a border or along a sunny path. You can associate it with the Iris ‘Cutie’, another white and blue intermediate iris, with the Allium amplectens ‘Graceful’, with the Salvia nemorosa ‘Schneehügel’ or with the Festuca glauca ‘Elijah Blue’. These plants will not smother its rhizomes and will combine well with its white, purple, and navy-blue tones.
