Description

Iris pseudacorus ‘Variegata’ or variegated yellow flag iris is a decorative perennial for waterside borders. In summer, golden yellow flowers accompany variegated foliage with cream-white stripes. Ideal for stabilising and enhancing your ponds.

This Iris grows up to 1m (3ft) tall, the elongated and narrow leaves are evergreen, green in colour and mainly marked by large cream-white lines. Its flowering occurs during the months of July and August in the form of golden yellow flowers, with a brown-spotted throat, grouped in threes at the top of the stems. These golden flowers and leaves will bring a true touch of sunshine around your ponds.

It is a perennial with good hardiness and great adaptability. Yellow flag irises thrive in a semi-aquatic environment on waterside borders or in wet ditches. They enjoy sunny and semi-shaded exposures, in combination with reeds, cattails, or hostas, for example.

Planting and care

The 'Variegata' Iris pseudoacorus grows in any moist to wet soil. However, it doesn't tolerate excessive limestone. To place it in shallow water (up to 20cm (8in)), plant it in a pot that you will bury halfway in the ground. Plant it especially along the edges of ponds and watercourses to help stabilise the banks.
