Attempted to shoot this spring (planted in the autumn) but quickly disappeared, likely suffocated by the neighbouring field of plants.

A unique anemone, exceptionally floriferous. Its double flowers, open from the top to the bottom of the plant, carried in abundance on dark stems. These ruffled flowers are light salmon pink in bud, then bloom in pure white, revealing a centre of yellow stamens. When temperatures drop, they take on a pink hue. The charm of this perennial cannot be ignored: it is unmatched in brightening up the semi-shaded areas of the garden from July to October. To be planted in moist, humus-rich soil, not too chalky.

Description

'Anemone 'Tiki Sensation' is a variety of the Japanese anemone that is absolutely unique and extremely floriferous, awarded a silver medal at Plantarium 2017. Its double flowers with incised petals, which resemble those of white peonies, bloom abundantly from the end of July, all along the plant's height. They are initially tinged with light salmon pink or bluish pink, then open up to reveal a pure white colour with a yellow stamen centre. As temperatures drop towards the end of the season, they take on various shades of pink. The charm of this perennial cannot be ignored: it brings life to the garden until autumn like few other plants can, even in shade or woodland areas.

Japanese anemone 'Tiki Sensation' is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. This recent Dutch creation is derived from Anemone hupehensis, native to central and western China. This variety will reach a height of approximately 90 cm (35in) when in bloom, depending on the richness of the soil it grows in, with a diameter of 45 cm. Like other Japanese Anemones, it is a perennial plant with fibrous 'tubers' that form large, vigorous, and rounded clumps. The foliage is deciduous to semi-evergreen depending on the climate, highly dissected, dark green, strongly veined on the underside, and hairy. The flowering period extends from July-August to October. The very numerous double flowers are borne on sturdy, slender, and upright stems, which may be long or short and are purplish-violet in colour. They first appear as delightful main and lateral buds, which is unique among these plants. They are oval and pale pink, nestled in small clusters of leaves, and then open up into wide, white loose cups composed of numerous broad, slightly twisted, and incised petals. Each flower unfolds to reveal a broad crown of yellow stamens. The flowers produced in October are more pink in colour. Japanese anemones can live for decades in the same location.

The Japanese anemone is one of the most beautiful flowers of autumn. Light and graceful, it sways gently in the wind, unaffected by the first frost. It decorates the garden or large pots on the terrace from late summer until the first frosts. Perfect at the back of a border for the taller varieties, it blends its elegant flowers with the grace of Aster cordifolius or Aster laevis, and the nostalgic charm of perennial chrysanthemums. The 'Tiki Sensation' variety is perfect in a border combined with Thalictrum, in front of a hedge of hydrangeas and spindles. The finely cut foliage of the anemones provides a beautiful dark green note to flower bouquets. It can be invasive if it is happy, and it self-seeds easily, although not always reliably. It is quite easy to control its growth.

Several dozen perennial or bulbous species with very different needs and behaviours make up this genus.  Cultivars derived from A. h. var. japonica have many more petals than the type.

Planting and care

Japanese anemones grow in partial shade, in a moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil with a loose texture and without too much limestone, where they slowly spread with the help of their underground rootstocks. Plant it in a sheltered spot, away from strong winds, in spring or autumn, spacing them 30 cm (12in) apart. Once the young plants are established, they should not be disturbed. The flowering becomes increasingly abundant as the years go by. In late autumn, cut the flower stems to ground level. Every 2 or 3 years, apply well-rotted compost at the base to enrich the soil, as they are quite demanding.
