Description

The small Macedonian Scabious or Knautia macedonica is a medium-sized perennial, hardy and capable of withstanding drought once established. Its rustic appearance brings a lot of lightness to flowerbeds, and its dark red pompom-shaped flowers bloom continuously from June to September, attracting numerous pollinators. Its long stems and long-lasting flowers make it ideal for charming bouquets, and its charm is inseparable from cottage gardens.

This Knautia, belonging to the dipsacaceae family, has a discreet and graceful silhouette. Its base consists of a basal rosette of simple, slightly toothed and evergreen leaves, from which long, slender and pubescent stems emerge. As you move up along these often branched stems, the leaves become sessile, progressively smaller and less numerous until reaching the capitulum. The capitulum is globular in shape (2 to 3 cm (1in)), a beautiful deep red with lighter-colored stamens, often pink. They are protruding and resemble pins stuck in a ball, giving it a slightly mischievous disheveled look. This medium-sized perennial is best planted in small groups, scattered among grasses or larger flowers, to add an intense touch among pastel shades. It prefers sunny locations that promote flowering, but also tolerates some afternoon shade. It can grow in different types of soil, sometimes even limestone, as long as they are well-drained. Pick them to encourage flowering or let them dry to create a winter decoration with their small ball-shaped fruits. They will self-sow if they are happy.

The habit of Knautia macedonica allows it to fit well into summer flowerbeds among cosmos, phlox, yarrows, but also grasses, thus adding a certain abundance. Easy to grow and floriferous, it actively contributes to the life of the garden by reacting to the slightest breeze and being a food source for butterflies and other pollinators. It will delight beginners and busy gardeners, offering them a very natural presence and an abundance of flowers.

Planting and care

Knautia macedonica establishes itself in well-drained soil with a sunny exposure during spring or autumn. It can tolerate partial shade for a small portion of the day (preferably in the afternoon). It can adapt to all types of soils and tolerate a slightly alkaline tendency. If the substrate has remained relatively moist during its establishment, it will withstand temporary drought.
