I bought it on the advice of a member of the Promesse de Fleurs team, because I was afraid it wouldn't get enough sun where I placed it (southwest), but in fact, it gets too much! I'm in the Var region with two months of heatwave and no rain. It bloomed beautifully for a month from May until mid-June, and then it started to burn. I had to buy a protective parasol for it. With a watering can every 4 days and the shade, it's growing new little green leaves, but my goal isn't to water this much! I'll definitely move it in the fall.

Description

The 'Burgundy Wine' lavatera, or Shrubby Mallow, is a semi-evergreen perennial with a striking deep pink flowering.

A fast-growing plant, it quickly reaches a height of 1.50m (5ft) and an approximate width of 1.20m (4ft). From the month of June, it is adorned with beautiful deep pink flowers, rich in color, funnel-shaped, with a diameter of 6cm (2in), arranged in clusters on the upper part of the stems.

It can be used as a free-standing hedge or as a background for borders. Along the seaside, it will retain its foliage during most of the winter.

Planting and care

Plant Lavateras in a sunny spot with rich and moist soil. Do not hesitate to cut flowers and make bouquets as pruning stimulates growth and makes the plants stronger. At the beginning of winter, cut them back to 50 cm (20in), above the first buds, and if the winter is very cold, mulch your plants. You can also shape them in the spring, especially if the cold has been harsh. These plants have a lifespan of 5 to 6 years. In large flower beds, renew one plant out of three every year. Lavatera can be easily propagated by cuttings.
