Description

The Lavatera maritima, has an abundant pale pink flowering with violet spots accompanied by ash grey foliage.

Originally from the south of France, the maritime lavatera is also known as the Spanish lavatera.

The numerous saucer-shaped flowers with five narrow petals similar to those of a Hibiscus are a very pale pink colour, maculated with purple-violet, and measure 6 cm (2in) in diameter. In our gardens, they bloom in June and last until September; in its natural habitat, it will be earlier.

The foliage of this tree mallow is evergreen and of a remarkable ash grey colour. In full season, the maritime lavatera can reach a height of 1.20 m (4ft). It is a very hardy and robust perennial.

Choose a warm and sunny exposure, and light and well-drained soils. Don't hesitate to add gravel to it during planting.

Planting and care

Plant Lavateras preferably in full sun in a rich, moist but well-drained soil. Protect them from cold and drying winds. They are resistant to salt spray. Feel free to cut flowers and make bouquets. Pruning stimulates growth and makes the plants stronger. At the beginning of winter, cut them back to 50 cm (20in) above the first buds, and if the winter is very cold, mulch your plants. You can also give them prune them into shape in spring. These plants have a lifespan of 5 to 6 years. In large flower beds, renew one plant out of three every year. Lavateras are easy to propagate from cuttings. Each year, as soon as the buds swell in March, leave only two or three buds at the base of the new shoots, to form a sturdy framework. Remove excess or misplaced old wood.
