Description
Liatris spicata 'Alba' is an elegant Kansas Gayfeather that reveals all its splendor when its long white spikes are used in contrast with black foliage or hemispherical inflorescences.
Originating from the United States, this vigorous plant with a fleshy stump forms a rosette of deciduous leaves, linear, 40cm (16in) long, green. The 90cm (35in) tall inflorescences, in dense and feathery white spikes formed by tubular ligules, have the particularity of first blooming from the top.
A melliferous plant, the Liatris spicata Alba likes a rather poor and well-draining soil, sandy, but remaining quite fresh in summer and a very sunny but not scorching exposure. Beware of attacks from slugs, snails, and mice that love the roots.
Liatris spicata 'Alba' is easy to grow and very cold-resistant. It is perfect for large rock gardens, mixed with grasses or Coreopsis.
Tips: From March to May, try indoor sowing at a temperature of 20°C (68°F). Germination takes about a month.

Planting and care
Liatris spicata 'Alba' should be planted from September to March, at a depth of 10cm (4in), spaced 20cm (8in) apart. Mulch after planting with compost. Water generously if it is dry. Divide the clumps in spring every 3 years. Beware of attacks from slugs, snails, and mice that love the roots. Liatris does not particularly fear excessive moisture that can be found in winter. However, it may still be prone to root rot in wet winters in heavy soils.
